Do you think this equipment is worth buying?

Postby yotamss » Wed Apr 14, 2021 7:18 pm

Hey everyone,
I just started kiting, until ow I used the equipment of a friend.
I am a student and can't allow myself to buy "new from the nylons" equipment.
I got an offer:
Three kites:
Wipika Wip 2004 - 16m, Ocean Rodeo Bronco 2004 - 14m, Cabrinha Nitro 12m.
Plus 3 mountains board.
Harness, helmet, and bar included.
All of this at 760 USD (990 Australian dollars).
I am not sure if it worth it, I have no experience with kites, and I don't know if they won't unwind (break apart or something like that) because they are that old (2004).
Is it a bad deal? :)

Thanks!

Hi mate,

Those kites are very old; If you are starting ,a modern kite would make your progress a lot easier and safer!

I would suggest to concentrate in finding one kite (rather than 3), a board and a bar newer than 2015. You may end up in the same money, but it would be a lot better for your progress and safer. The key is to go to your local kite spot and ask the regulars that looks about your size what do they use 80% of the time and concentrate your search on that size kite/board. For example, I got a quiver of 5 kites, however I use my 14m 80% of the time, same for one of my 3 boards. Yes it would be nice to have options, but I wouldn't want options to the expense of buying older gear.

Cheers,
G.

No, all that stuff is obsolete and dangerous junk.

Good old days 😉
Back then a kite could fall right from zenith. Relaunch by swimming fast enough downwind to turn the kite on its back and then bit to side to get the kite launching. Real depower was in your legs as in bar it was something like 10cm and the next 10cm just made backlines looser and kite turned worse. 2003/2004 bars started to have new innovations like quickreleases which my first kite didn't have. Every year kites changed that much that you needed to know which brand and model really worked.

With a one modern kite you could about to cover a bigger useable range than with of all those three kites.

So I hope you saved the money and will get a newer kite.

Yes, very bad deal. None of them have any safety.

If you're just getting into the sport and value your life, do not buy prior to 2015. I think all major brands were single front line safety by that point. (except fOne in 2017?). Individual brands sorted their safety systems earlier, but for a newbie without a lot of knowledge of the equipment, just steer clear of anything earlier to save time and potentially your life.

Boards don't matter though in regards to safety. Harnesses are very personal and I always advise buying after a fitting at a local shop.

Lastly, please make sure you take enough lessons until you're comfortable with moderate kite control.

I think I may know your friend!

Does he have long hair and a ginger beard, with a 20m cabrinha black tip that he uses for lessons.

( I think he is missing his little finger on his left hand also)

You will find better stuff for free if you ask around locally. This stuff is not worth anything anymore.
