Strobe light ratings

ACR 3970.3 Firefly PRO Solas Manually Operated Rescue Strobe Light. 41 Candela, says 3 miles

https://www.acrartex.com/products/firefly-pro-solas

Princeton tech Aqua strobe. 100 lumens, says 1 mile

https://princetontec.com/product/aqua-strobe-led/

Lumens refers to the total amount of light emitted by a lighting apparatus and is denoted by L. The higher the lumens value of a lighting device, the greater is the area lighted up by it. On the other hand, candela refers to the amount of light emitted by a lighting device in a particular direction.

Would have been nice for these two products to have the same scientific standard .

Any scientific people care to comment.

Looks like a difference in lensing. Lenses concentrate or diffuse the light. Princeton's looks like it spreads the the light out for an all around diffusulion. The ACR looks more like you'd only get the 3 mile rating if you pointed it directly at the rescue vessel.

Kind of tough to do that to a boat when you are a "bobber". Better luck with listening for a helicopter, and pointing in the general direction.

The ACR product has a spec sheet showing 257 lumens flash.
