When will Aluula make it to other brands?

Postby caps » Sat Apr 17, 2021 8:17 pm

I hear so much about the Aluula kites from OR. They sound awesome, but expensive. Anyone have any idea when it might get to other kite brands?

Cheers!

Great question, but I would expect when other kite brands introduce their Aluula kites, they will be top end in their line-up and not inexpensive. The price of an Aluula kite likely won't come down until their is wide adoption and the fabric is being mass-produced.

It will be interesting to see how kite designers from other brands utilize Aluula's enhanced material properties. For example, looking forward to seeing what Greg Drexler does with an Aluula Cloud.

Would imagine they gave themselves a couple years head start. With Covid maybe 3.

I kinda wonder what other products a material like this will improve. Inflatable tents, camping/climbing gear. inflatable boards, foldable boats etc. So many of those could stand to shed weight and take higher pressures.

From what I understood: when OR launched the first aluula kites the Aluula company was only in talks with other kite manufacturers.
Seeing that both stitching and inflation replacement system needed to be modified I guess it’s quite a bit of work to figure it out and setup manufacturing.
Then there is the whole kite redesign part

With the limited teams in most kite brands (usually a single kite designer?) I guess it will take a significant amount of time.
And then there is the question how much Aluula fabric is actually available.

For sure I would not hold your breath for cheaper options anytime soon. From what I have seen OR has reasonable prices for their Dacron kites so based on Dacron prices a Duotone/North/Core/Ozone Aluula option would probably be even more expensive.

Just another thought - have we not all learned that LIFE is SHORT and anything can happen this past year...? If you are lucky enough to be alive in this time with these options are you NOT worth it?

The simple question is how much do you value your kiteboarding experience?
For some possibly many that answer would be substantial - look at the tech in mountain bikes, are they worth it - ride one and you will see.

It's a matter of priorities - in the words of Amanda Gorman,

"When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it"

It is quite surprising that neither of the light wind kites of Duotone got the SLS treatment (Juice/Mono).
Indeed does sound likely they are busy with Aluula for those.

I've seen a video of Sam Light at Hayling Island out with some groms having a couple of fun sessions. Some of the kites looked like Aluula protypes and at least one of them was Duotone. I think the video is on here somewhere.

I don't think it is a given that prices will go up. When supply is limited - sure, but is there any reason why one wouldn't be able to produce aluula in high volumes within some years?

And I would both imagine and hope that this leads to further development among other types of materials. To get some proper competition.
