Why did they stop making surfboards for fat guys?

Postby tanre » Tue Apr 20, 2021 2:19 am

OK, so Im not fat...but, uh, large boned. Nah, actually in pretty good shape, but a big guy. For years been searching for directionals to kite with. Mitu used to have a 6'0" board. Now all the manufacturers stop at 5'10" and to add insult to injury, they actually publish that its for guys under 95kg. What about us who are over?!?!?!?

I have searched soooo MANY!!!

Jimmy Lewis 6'3" Canary is the only one I have found that comes close..and mine has been on back order for over a year:)

Runner up is North Charge at 5'11" and 29L of volume...and yep, you guessed it...made for under 95kg peeps again.

Just want a 6'0", or 6'1"...and maybe encroaching on 30L...is that too much to ask!!...ok, also would like em 23" wide:)

Rant over

You could get a FireWire. Not as strong but huge range.

there are plenty of fatboys that rip bra..

and there are plenty of surfboards that cater to 'em..

helpful hint: you CAN use a "normal" shortboard to kite-surf..
..much more selection from some truly talented shapers...and half of them sell on amazon.
..just get a couple sizes down if you will exclusively use while being dragged by a kite.

for the same price as that cbeaply made and poorly balanced imitation fish from duoone.. you can get a Mahi Fish Shortboard which will ride faster while giving the classic turns of a fishtail

Good surfboards are custom surfboards.
You can get what you want in a board, or you can get what you want in decals.
There are guys that will make a 7’6” shortboard for performance surfers who weigh over 300 lbs., and do it well.
A board for anyone 180-220lb is not unreasonable or even unusual for a good shaper.

You could approach apple tree. One of the owners is a pretty big guy. Maybe check out this board: https://appletreesurfboards.com/product ... oard/#size ?

Try to find an old Slingshot Tyrant 6’1” x 18 5/16” x 2 1/2” VOLUME 27L
The bamboo model - pretty tough deck for heavier guys!

i know,right

...those perfect barrels closest to shore are formed over a couple feet of hard lava rock. that dude literally rode like he had a deathwish.

the Banzai Pipeline probably wouldnt be the best place to test out your shiny new gear...especially during the winter swells
