Looks like Kite racing is back in play with IOC

Possible second medal to be allocated to kiting for Paris Games and get rid of the relay? This could really turbo charge the racing scene

That's how it should be! Making a relay race is a joke.

Men's racing is pretty close between the top competitors but not so in the women's.

The result of a mixed relay race would be the same as the result of a women's only race.

I agree with that, but I think that the number of medals for the Olympic Game is fixed. Therefore, If you add a new sport, you have to remove one or more to have the exact same number of medals. So by adding Kitesurf AND Surf for the next Olympic (Paris, for sure, Tokyo I can't tell), you have to minimize the impact on other sports. Making a "male/female" relay just requires 3 medals for the whole competition.

But you're right, result will mostly be driven by the women performance.

Number of sports/medals etc seems an entirely arbitrary restriction that case in point can render a competition into a farce.

more sports, more medals.

Olympics could be a bit more flexible...

Yes the numbers of medals and athletes allocated to sailing by the IOC is fixed in the short term, so getting rid of the offshore keelboat event frees up a medal and space which could get allocated to kiting - the view seems to be that it is kiting that will subsidizing the rest of sailing as it is the event that is going to bring most viewers. So most likely it will get the second medal.

I can see why they might want to keep the medal count the same year to year so you can gauge the performance of nations without giving a % of gold medals won.
