Pinch flat on leading edge bladder?

Postby kct » Mon Apr 26, 2021 2:58 am

I pumped my kite, allowing the air pressure to unroll it. Was looking ok until I heard a hiss from the tip. Hissed flat. Ok.

Back home and there's a pretty sizeable hole. Is this because I didn't lay the kite flat before pumping? OTOH a few months ago I removed that bladder to patch a pinhole near the struts. Perhaps I didn't repack it correctly?

Also, is this too big to fix?

My guess, you didn't put the LE back correctly. You should be able to patch this. This time, stick.it back, then gently pump it it halfway, check for rolls and wrinkles, massage it into position, and then pump it up firmly.

I never lay out my kite flat before pumping it up, but I never roll it up very precisely either. If you do, it might be wise to unroll first.

I just sort of throw it, pump it up somewhat, check for tangles should the wingtips stick together. If not, it will fold out just nicely.

Good luck second time around!

Pumping the kite before unrolling is fully can cause blow outs in the Leading Edge because over time it twists the LE bladder.
