Mystic Majestic 5mm vs 4mm for colder water (early access & late exit)

Postby inHell » Thu Apr 29, 2021 2:30 am

Dear Community,

I know that there are many threads here about this topic but I wanted to add some personal details to the topic with the hope that you can assist me more precisely to choose the right wetsuit thickness for me.

  • I know the Wetsuit I’m about to buy: Mystic Majestic
  • I’ll wear a lifejacket
  • I mainly search for a Wetsuit fitting the regional water temps around me (Germany[DE], Netherlands[NL])
  • I Want to start early in the year (not in the winter though) – like from March to November
  • I just got the money for only one good Wetsuit
  • I freeze easily and like really like warmth (at 68°f || 20°c I like to wear more than just a shirt and shorts) and I love swimming in shorts when the water temp is about or higher than 75°f || 24°c :lol:
  • And yeah I’m a bloody noob and just entering the sport so I guess I`ll spend a good amount of time in the water :D
Mystic Majestic 5/3 and 4/3 specs:
-------------------------------------------------
• Waterproof stretch taping (100%): all seams
• GBS (Glued Blind Stitch)
• Wind Mesh back panel
• YKK Front-zip
• Aquabarrier
• Glideskin neck construction
• Hex-tech kneepads
• Velcro ankle closure straps (included)
• Non slip cuffs
• Key pocket 2.0: keyloop with mini buckle
• Aquaflush

https://www.mysticboarding.com/products ... -43#14181E
-------------------------------------------------
Regional Temperatures here in the North Sea(DE), East Sea(DE) and Ijsselmeer(NL):

Early spring (March)
- 35,6-48,2°f || 2-9°c

One Month later (April)
- 39,2-53,6°f || 4-12°c

End of autumn (November)
- 39,2-48,2°f || 4-9°c

One month earlier (October)
- 44,6-57,2°f || 7-14°c

The other place I`ll kite is the Red Sea(EGY) where the water temp is high enough to kite with just shorts, normally. So I guess this point doesn’t really matter.

My Questions:

  • Is a 5mm more suited under these conditions?
  • Is it worth thinking about a 4mm with additional clothes underneath the wetsuit?
  • Is the flexibilities really that worse with a 5mm instead of the 4mm (specifically with the above mentioned wetsuit)
  • Is the ability to move more impaired by with 5mm wetsuit then by adding additional layers with a 4mm wetsuit?
  • Say I go for the 5mm, is the increasing heat with the following months really that noticeably and unbearable and is it the "selling point“ to go for a 4mm specially if I normally like heat and can handle it better than the cold?
My thoughts:

  • If I go for the 5mm, a 3mm would be a nice extension if i got the money for it which seems a bit pointless if i would go for the 4mm.
  • If Its to hot, wouldn’t it be enough to let some water into the wetsuit to cool down a bit?
  • I I’m firm on buying the above mentioned wetsuit but are open to listen to your experience if the suit is an acceptable wetsuit for me.
  • I wonder if the 5/3 is good enough or a 5/4 would be much better but yeah there is no 5/4 version of the Majestic.
Things I purposefully left out:

  • Additional clothes like Boots, socks, cap, gloves
Thanks a lot and all the best.
Looking forward to reading your posts.

Definitely 5mm. That is the standard thickness for us here riding e.g. the Northsea in Germany. If it is windy in summer it is not that warm. I ride all year round. We have the end of April now, air temperature on windy days is 8-9 degrees, water is 8-9. I am still very comfortable in my 6/5mm hooded wetsuit. Get the 5mm and add layers like hooded vest and neopren hoodie for the really cold days (beside the boots and gloves).

For me 5/4 mm is better, as I usually start getting cold at the upper arms and shoulders. Neither the legs as they are very active during riding (we are not surfers, who sit in the water most of the time), nor the core (I usually also wear an impact vest).

I live in eastern europe, so our conditions are very similar. If you plan to buy only one wetsuit you should definitely get 5mm. It will be the best allrounder for you.

In Belgium pretty much everyone uses the 5mm all year around if they only have one wetsuit.

5mm

If the 5mm gets too hot in summer just buy a cheap basic 3/2 for < €100

The 5mm material is really flexible compared to what it used to be like

I only had a 3/2 for years in Norway. Now I got a 4/3 as well. I would argue for 95% of the time here excluding mid winter (when 5/4 wouldn't work either) 4/3 is perfect. Got to be said that is influenced slightly by light. In the late autumn we get so little light that restricts kiting more than the temperature. Not sure how that works slightly further south. In the weekends you can get some hours, but after work come late october and it is just dark.

Interesting that the consensus is 5/4. I didn't expect that. From someone that used to wear jeans living in Singapore.

Vikings have a different attitude towards the cold...
