Helmets for kitesurfing and the bucketing and drag myth

I wouldn't go with a Gath for kite surfing, think you need something a bit sturdier. Re the bucketing thing, I used to WaterSki Race back in the mists of time, the races were 50 miles long and you are surounded by big powerful boats, so as well as the risks of high speed falls you've got boats and props around you so a helmet is kind of de rigeur. Having said that I windsurfed for forty years and other than when riding a tandem, have never used one, the risks didn't seem so apparent and I can't say I like riding with one. Had a very bad life ending (temporarily) accident kiting very early on pre quick release mechanisms, it was a high speed head butt of the promenade wall so have used a helmet kiting ever since I chose one with a peak, more for style than functionality but it's quite tough bought it in the states, but it has no holes for 'bucketing' but we really don't come near the water ski race speeds, so again didn't think the risk was high enough to mitigate and so far have been proved correct.

Can't remember what it's called it a canoe/kayak jobbie bought in Hood River.

that one is so light because it has no hard shell, just exposed polystyrene so will likely get damaged pretty easily on the beach or in the car. The expandable / seperate sections at the back make me nervous looking at it too for some reason, but it at least offers some protection
I have the pro wip 2 and it really doesn't weigh much at all, way lighter than the snow helmet i tried using when i took up foiling, and no noticeable bucket effect or extra whiplashing from my very numerous crashes. If only it was easier / affordable to put music into the earpads and it would be perfect

First thing I would do to that helmet is laminate (2) layers of 1.8oz Kevlar
with a layer of carbon matt between , + Epoxy ; it would still be light, but
Way stronger and almost no bigger.

EPP Expanded polypropylene. Very different to polystyrene.

I have one with ear covers. They hurt like a bastard. Going to cut them off when my old helmet dies.
