Quiver sizes 7/9/12/15 Vs 7/10/13

Postby ACD2B » Thu Jun 24, 2021 8:19 am

Hello everyone,

I am 95kgs and I am thinking of upgrading my quiver. Currently I have 7/9/12/15 and we share it with my girlfriend who is on the beginners side and weight 50kgs.

I just sold my 9 and 15 and thinking to replace them with North Reach or Duotone Evo and considering to replace my 12m and 15m with a 13m and the 9m with a 10.

I live in the Netherlands and winds I ride with are from 15-25 for which I use my 12. For 13-17 knots I'd jump on the 15 and use my partially light wind surf board.

I do feel that 15m is often nicely powered when I see other people struggling with their 12m, usually lighter people, but never tried to compare 15m Vs 12m in the same low sind conditions, but thinking that there might not be such a difference. Anyway, that's where the 13m and 10m idea comes from.

Any thoughts and experience of owning 13/10 quiver Vs 12/9 and some have some comparison with between the 15m and 12/13? I only ride on a TT and a light wind surfboard (RRD spark). No foiling and not considering it for now :-)

The quiver must be built arround your favourite size.

Mine is 10m. Then a 14m and 7m surrounding it.

If you add a foil i think you could cut the biggest size and get away with a 10-7m quiver only.

I keep my 14m because I still enjoy twintipping from time to time, but using it with my moses 679 i feel overpowered very soon, so I ended up using the 10m even in the lightest winds.

Thanks. I like riding my 12m, but feel like lot of times I ride just power and sometimes underpowered on it with my TT, so thinking one size might be a good option and on the high end I would say it would be very close with the 12m and in 24+ knot winds take out the 10m and 7m in closer to 40knots. Btw, I see you're from Sant Pere Pescador. We come to the coast quite often for the last 20 years or so, so hello :-)

Was there in August last year and the wind was 14-17knots every day and my 12m was not enough to ride in this wind, so that's where the idea for a 15m came from as well a light wind surfboard. Waves don't help with the lower wind as well, but still, think with the 15m I could have riden everyday, unlike with 12m or 13m?

I'm 92kg and used to have 7/10/14 set of switchblades and now I moved to 8/11m XR6 + 15m soul. I have adjustable line length on my bar for both Core and Flysurfer kite and this allows me to keep such a large gaps. Recently started to foil and if I really like it I would probably change to more foil friendly kite set of 8/10 and maybe keep my soul 15m. When I have loads of power I do go for big air jumps with some basic grabs and backrolls, when wind is lighter I try to learn new tricks and if it really light I would probably end up foiling.

What sized board? I'd expect it to be at least 44cm wide for your weight. Can you get a bigger board for the 12m in 15-18knots? I hear good things about the Shinn King range (50cm wide but don't feel like a light wind board )

Also - even at 70kg, I'd still be on a hydrofoil in 15knots with my biggest kite so its still light wind.

Not sure if there is a right or wrong answer to this.

You will lose some days with 15 vs 13, but how many and how many of those are good days is a different thing.

For me personally, SolarSet's setup makes a lot of sense. Even with only LEIs I wouldn't say 15 - 11 - 8 is much of an issue. 15 - 11 is less of a spread than for example 10 - 7.

I will definitely reduce from 7-9-12-17 to a 3 kite setup myself next time around.

I’m 95kg and have been riding a 7/9/12/15 quiver of core XRs for 2-3 years. I’m in a lighter wind spot near NYC, so I rode the 15m on twin tip a lot. I don’t think I could combine the 9 and 12 into a 10 and get away with it. For some reason that feels like a big gap to cover with one kite in my mind.

I did start foiling recently, and now I’m not really using the 15m, I added a 12m single strut xlite for the really light wind days.

Awesome dilemma, great question!
Getting back to my 200 lbs yet for years my favorite jumping size has been 9m and I can’t stand 12m size because they’re slow. So I’ve had a bit out of balance quiver of 5/7/9/11 but of that 9 is perfect size and 11 is the biggest I can have fun with.

I used to have 15m as well yet 13/15/17 sizes are usually meant for lightwind riding and lightwind TT riding starts with a door board and long lines.

So if you tried the 10m and it was better than 9 - pick that and plan the quiver around it.
