Beginner Question: How to prevent water in nose during body dragging?

Postby dobermankby » Thu Jul 08, 2021 10:34 pm

Hello, I've taken two lessons so far, and we have covered all the safety stuff (setup, launch, land, self-rescue) plus some body dragging and power stroke without board.
Last weekend I went out to the beach at Hood River event site with my own gear by myself for the first time and practiced some kite control + body dragging.
I have a problem while body-dragging: I get a lot of water in my nose every 5-10 seconds. It hurts so much that I have to basically stop.
Besides this problem, I don't think I have any other issue with kite control, body position, hand position etc. I feel like I can body drag in the direction I want to go properly until this happens.
This happens even in waves that are 1 foot or less high. (Hood river event side in the afternoon with <20 kts)
Is this normal? Do you just get used to getting all that water in your nose constantly? Does it stop hurting after a while? (can't imagine so) or am I doing something wrong?
I had an impact vest during the practice (but not a floatation vest) I tried to face downwind, didn't help much.
I really want to practice this more and get good at it, but this problem is preventing me from even practicing it.
What other techniques do you recommend to help with this issue? Thanks a lot.

I body drag a lot…and don’t have that problem.

Maybe due to the angle when I drag…I assume you are looking to your kite when you drag…and I am not.

Try next time to look less to your kite…and see if this makes a difference.

And maybe fly your kite higher…this way you get a bit lifted from the water.

I think you need to concentrate to always inhale through your mouth in water. Maybe even swim first in waves to build the habit. Also, I'm quite sure that You can try to use a noseclip as a crutch but it might come with another set of discomfort.

Assuming you have normal physiology teaching yourself to use a snorkel without a mask will help you control this aspect of your breathing. Oddly when I first started this as part of dive training I could do it if I kept my eyes shut but had to learn to do it with my eyes open. Not that difficult just took one pool session. Freestyle swimming and tumble turn training will also sort it out

For context, dragging in anything other than flat water is not particularly pleasant and actually requires more skill than just riding imho. As long as you are using an area where you drift to safety it might be less testing to concentrate on riding and go back to body dragging once you have acquired more skills. Obviously there is a sensible balance to be found with this which depends on location and conditions. Flat wcater - loads of body dragging. Onshore surf beach - little or no body dragging.

I think timing exhaling through your nose might prevent the water going in. So inhale through mouth and exhale through nose when you hit a wave.
Also kite a bit higher in the winded as mentioned by Toby will help but you will lose a bit of upwind angle doing so.
I also don’t look at the kite as mentioned. Face the other/up direction to get your face as high as possible.
Any floatation aid should also give some help. Note that eg a neoprene wetsuit also adds some flotation.

When I started out I spent a lot of time floating on my back looking up at the kite. Every little chop would go straight up my nose. The water at Belmont Shore isn't the cleanest so I bought one of those nose clamps that swimmers use.

It helped. Then I lost it but by that time I was standing up for most of my session and thus didn't need it.

Hold your breath, exhale.

Are you new to being in water?

I can not help you, but on video you sometimes see someone holding their nose when they jump in the water for the first time - maybe it is the same if you are new?

It will pass I am sure, as I don't know anyone having this issue...

I am in the water a lot, hydrofoiling, dragging often to get back to my board.

So if noone has the "secret" to avoid it now when new, don't worry it will pass and be non existing later :thumb:

Maybe you are looking to much forward ?
This would expose your nose to more water, instead holding your chin further down, then no water would enter.

Try maybe to lay on your side while body dragging, not your breast frontal and flat on the water.
Like this you will cut better thru the water, go better upwind, and should get less water in your nose.

Pls try all and let us know what helped best for you.

Well, your body technique is probably fine then.
An instructor I knew always said: "if it doesn't feel like you are drowning when body dragging... then your technique is wrong"
