+1 for Leeuwen, he's spot on!
Also as other mentioned, Rebel or XR is your kite!
Another one for Leeuwen, evo sls is not good in gusts believe me! From personal experience the rebels are much better suited to gusty conditions..

in gustier condition with maybe also lulls seams to be better higher aspect LEI kites as:

- Ozone Edge
- Duotone Rebel
- Core XR (also if it's not very high aspect)

being higher aspect gives them more wind range and more depower at the bar, then they normally go more further in the wind window this makes them less physical to control

I have a 10m Edge V10 and have very big wind range and really a lot of depower at the bar, some days ago I have tested for 3 hours a Core XR7 10m and it's very comfortable too, the difference I noted the most between the two is that with the Edge you control the gust with your body on the center lines, with the XR the gusts are more going onto the back lines so you can "discharge" them simply rapidly moving the bar, the Core XR is maybe a more comfortable ride(with little less performance and speed), easier, easy to jump, and a little faster to move, the Edge is much more stable, have probably more wind range and more depower at the bar, and more hangtime and if get skilled can get higher on jumps

never tried the Rebel but as the first two here is a benchmark, sure that also North is coming with Orbit and Reach

Switchblade is very physical especially in strong wind as is not high aspect, but still a benchmark kite

Where I kite is crazily gusty with lots of lulls too... sometimes I ask myself if is still kiting or more battling with elements :D but it's very often windy so I love the spot!

i just got an RRD Addction Y25 / 2020 (5 Struts) ... so far it seeem very nice, very stable and good depower, big windrange, less barpessure für long sessions.

i kite a lot at a very gusty lake as well. I rode the cabrinha switchblades für some years since the RRD Obession became a freestyle kite. They are very predicteble kites and easy to use (easy to learn jumping) the only bad side for me where the high barpressure on the bigger kites esp the 14m ... and maybe the they could be a little faster turning für some tricks. But they behave very good in gusty conditions.
Thank you..I also have an RRD Y24 Addiction 8m 3strut 2019..can you please tell me more for y25 Addiction?..Do you feel comfortable with it?..which size do you have?
Hi, van I ask where you got your RRD? Are you from the US?
I'm looking for a 10,5 to buy, new or used, in the US and can't seem to find any.

Hallo guys, I would like to change my kite (RRD Passion 10.5m 2019, 3 strut kite) and want to buy (same wind range 12-26knts)a new kite for very gusty conditions (10-20knts...or 15-30knts).
Can you please tell me what characteristics I must search for?..I would like an RRD kite but every proposal is welcome

P.S...just riding, no jumps yet ..53years old, 1 year kiter..25 years windsurfer
Hi there, may I ask where you got your RRD from? I'm looking for a 10.5 un the US and don't seem to find it. Either new or used.

slingshot ghost (12-17m, i have the 15m) with twintip. riding the ponds /reservoirs here in montana are gusty to say the least.
-will stay airborne in lightest of lulls (important in MT due to numerous hazards dw at most spots)
-easiest relaunch and/or reverse launch
-fast reactive steering for looping, powerstroke, and creating apparent wind
-handles the spikes well, doesnt put you on your face when the wind punches up to high 20s
-while low aspect, still has large depower range. coupled with a low kite position and an upwind bearing, the gusts are easily dealt with.

I would stay away from higher aspect big air kites in gusty conditions, especially since you aren’t even jumping yet.

I would go with a single strut kite for gusty conditions:
- good low end means you can be on a smaller kite which helps deal with the gusts
- almost impossible to Hindenburg
- luffing allows them to react to lulls instantly
- fly deep in the window when overpowered due to flutter
- good upwind which can be a change when going from underpowered to overpowered

For twin tip riding I'd recommend 5/3 stutter over 1 strutter unless you are a beginner ...you can handle any gust with edging and the wind range of 5 strut impressive. Its not justthe gust but what yu do after the gust..1 strut would be so boring..6m Edge I rid in storms and rain -TT , Reo on Hydrofoil but guess this is about TT

1 strut kites are fine on TT for everything aside from powered looping.

They have lower hang time but still boost almost as high.

I can vouch for the Core XR’s as great kites for gusty-strong wind performance, have flown same size Pivots & XR’s back to back and the XR is a much more confidence inspiring ride. When gust hits XR just moves to edge of window with a little sheeting out, Pivot seems to load up and require edging to push it forward.
I own mostly Pivots but my storm kite is 8m XR for that reason.

+1 for XRs, I spent the last 3 years riding them in gusty conditions, and they are really stable. Made tougher conditions a bit more manageable.

I know they are a bit on the heavier side, but maybe that’s what makes them be able to absorb some gusts
