Kiteboard helmet for long head

Postby ffoil » Mon Aug 02, 2021 4:19 pm

Hi,

I'd like to purchase a water helmet for kiteboarding. I have an XL size head (~62cm) but it's long front to back and not round (think Alien!) I don't have any stores close to me so can't try different brands/models/sizes easily.

Has anyone had success finding a comfortable water helmet to fit someone with a long/oval/oblong shaped head.

Thanks.

I have the same problem. I currently use a cheap Pro-Tec Ace water helmet that fits ok but is a bit loose on sides of my head. It’s worn in now for better fit than when I started.

My friend took a mold of his head and made a carbon fiber helmet that’s pretty sweet.

My experience is that the NP is the most alien like, the ProTec in the middle and Mystic is most round (think Charlie Brown). I can't tell if NP even exists anymore. Nothing from them has been imported to the USA in over a year. Can't speak to the Gaath and other brands. There just aren't that many choices out there.

Many helmets like the Protec Ace fit tight on the front and back and loose on the sides. The fix is easy.
Tie a strap or rope around the helmet very tightly and make it very compressed side to side. Then take a heat source like a hair dryer to it for a while. You will permanently deform it. :-)
I have done this to several helmets and it works.

This is a pretty essential tool.

https://www.harborfreight.com/power-too ... 56434.html

But use the low setting and go slow.

And it also doubles as a snowboard waxing device that will work with an 800w inverter run off your car. Plus by coloring on the wax, then corking with a wax dipped wine cork, you save tons of wax by not scraping.

Excellent information, everyone. Appreciate the input. Seems NP may be the way to start.

I use a cycling helmet 👍 like a Skateboard style one.

Might be a good idea to have a look at some cycling ones. You might find a better range as it's a bigger sport👍
