How to repair structural crack on TT ?

Postby DariKite » Wed Aug 04, 2021 9:09 pm

I bought this board cheap but has a crack where the fin is. The previous owner drilled a new hole and moved the fin to hold the crack. The crack is structural, not just on surface. I'm pretty confident that the screws can prevent further damage for a few sessions if I glass it.

I will fix it but what is the best method? I was thinking of sanding to the core, applying liquid epoxy and two sheets of fiberglass cloth. Is 2" around the crack line enough or should I glass it all the way to the edge of the board? I don't intend to jump with this board.

What about the core? Should I use something other than epoxy?

Hello Darikite,
It looks like there is a break in the core as well which makes more involved to repair, if you can try to expose both sides for 2+ inches from the break , grind carefully down to the core ,trying to have a beveled shape down to the core from the face of the board not a sharp transition ,if you can do a small scarf joint in the crack area of the core with a piece of wood it will be stronger, then do the fiberglass +epoxy repair on both sides , using some thin mdf or plywood covered in plastic or tape to press the repair to the board with clamps. I attach some photos of a repair to give you an idea , I hope this helps,I will keep the new fin hole as it helps to strengthen this spot.
good luck with your repair and good winds :bye:

Epoxy is great to hold 2 pieces together. It kind of sucks as stand alone material. If you have a significant gap, definetly make sure you use glass fabric and epoxy.

G-flex is the perfect epoxy for this repair if there is very little gap between the 2 materials you intend to join. It is also much more crack resistant than higher strength epoxies.

Thanks, I ended up sending it to a surfboard shop. That scarf joint sounds way too advanced for me. We'll see how it goes. Nice repair on your pics!

Nice, I didn't know there are different kinds of epoxy.

You could also sand it down and them place a patch of wood or marine grade SS with a powerful adhesive to spread any load to undamaged sections.

I did this years ago to salvage a favorite board from 2015, the patch holds to this day. I used 5200 for the adhesive.
