Naish stomp review by users

Postby alex85 » Sat Aug 28, 2021 7:41 am

Need an advice: I'm searching for a board soft on the landings ad exceptional on the chop to use for unhooked freestyle on straps (I'm 72 kg for 171 cm).
I hate boards skatey boards!!!

I found a good deal for a Stomp but cannot try before to buy, according by Naish it seems to be the board for me, but I found few reviews and I'm undecided on the size (135x42 or 138x42.5).
I've got an Asylum 2020 that's exceptional on chop and landings but I feel I dont have the grip I want.

If someone can help or compare I will be grateful!!!

I have a great deal of experience with the Stomp, and not a lot of experience with other boards. I own a Core Fusion (Which I broke, repaired, and my partner is using now) a Crazyfly Bulldozer (Which I broke, repaired, and am now storing) and a Nobile XTR light wind twintip. Of the bunch, the Stomp is the heaviest, the stiffest, but it feels the most forgiving on the water. It does feel like it plows through chop, and the landings are quite forgiving. Upwind sucks. Every time I borrow the Core I can feel all the ripples in the water, and laugh at how easy I upwind. Cannot rightfully comment on grip: my heel side fins are about 2/3 the original size from riding in shallow water or on the beach. Also worth mentioning that a good 5-10mm is missing from my heel side rail from the same thing.

I weigh about 85kg at 180cm, and I use the 142. I have a 138 Stomp that I use in Cape Town.

So, in short, it is a bomber board, takes a beating, does not punish you for it, but you pay for it upwinding.

I have the 134 2016 DUB witch I think is pretty much the same board.
One thing is for sure, this is not a light wind board, it has a lot of rocker and drag, and because of that it is quite slow.
But it goes through chop like a hot knife through butter and the landings are super soft, I have suffered a bad knee injury and after the surgery I have never gotten it back to 100%, so the DUB is really forgiving on my knees on choppy conditions and thats why I like it.
While its not the best board in light wind, it really shines in overpowered conditions, tons of grip and since its not that fast you wont accelerate to the point where things get out of control, also the upwind performace gets better with higher wind.
I have fitted 5cm fins to my board since it originally came with the 3.8cm fins, and it felt a little too skatey like this, but the 5cm seem a lot better.
The board seems like it is indestructible, really tough construction, thanks to that its on the heavier side.
PS. I ride it with straps.

Do you ride it with straps or boots?

Straps. I am sure the board shines with boots, but I do not personally like like risks that come from boots if you have a rare failure or a foot slipping out.

At 72kg you're looking at 135-138 x 42 board? Don't you think that's this is a little too much board for your weight? This might explain the lack of grip you're experiencing.

Hell, I'm 90-93kg and my go-to board is a 135X42.

At 70kg I'd be looking into 130-132 range and not fatter than 39.

Hi
I have been riding the asylum and now the stomp. Both equally in good at landings and chop.
The stomp has more rocker than the asylum and needs more wind than the asylum.
I’m 171cm and 67 kg riding it with boots, I ride the stomp 138. Because it’s wider and better at the low end.

By my experience size of the board is just a part of the puzzle.

1-Rocker line (considering channeling and concave)
2-Size
3-Flex
4-Outline

To me those are the paramaters that matters in order of importance in the behavior of a board.
I have had a 136X41 (2012 Brunotti Youri pro) that I felt huge,a 138x42 (2014 SS Asylum) that I felt just perfect and a 135x41 (2015 Cab X caliber) that I felt to small (conidering also that 90% of my kite session are between 12 and 20 knots).
Now I'm riding an ozone torque v1 136x41 as go to board: I think is one of the best board ever ridden, it has no limits on high end but at same time make me planning really early thanks to his tracking, and the pop is mental.
Is the only board I bring with me if I have to choose just one, but I'm searching for a second board for pure wakestyle that is more forgiving on landings and trought chop (Ozone is not bad in those areas and also if I think is the best compromise I can find, there are boards that rides better considering only this 2 parameters).

I can remember Asylum 2014: for sure was a slow board and you have to be lit to to go upwind with minimal effort, super heavy, but you can land everything on this board, the tracking was unbeatable, you ride trought chop thinking you're on flat and you can literally turn off the wind no matter kite size you have. I'm searching for the same feelings.
I bought 2020 Asylum thinking to find the same board of 2014 but honestly I did not understand new model: the flex is too much and also if the board is faster I found a lack of grip not even comparable to the older model.
