Apple Airtag on Kiteboards

Postby dejavu » Mon Sep 20, 2021 6:04 am

Ok, So since May 2021 I have had an Apple Airtag on my Kiteboards, just in case one decides to seperate from me. 25 sessions later and all is well. Battery showing full and linking to my "Find My" app ok. Waterproof so far! The housing is available on ebay for a few bucks. Nice Insurance policy.

Ah, I’ve been looking for a good excuse to get one of these but haven’t been able to find one. This is a pretty good reason!

Agree. It’s a good way to track. I hope the waterproofing stays.

I guess it only works if you lose your board in a crowded place?

If you roughly know where the board may wash up you can ping it or if others with iPhones are nearby it will ping you but if stolen then you better track quickly before the theif finds the tag and disables. It’s better than nothing.

I like the idea, but from what I have seen in tests the signal is quite weak and you got to get really close (or someone else gets really close with an iPhone).

GREAT idea as someone who has lost his board a few times. I have stickers on my boards with my contact info and have lucked out with kind samaritans over the years. (I even found my Nobile board that I lost after a couple of years! It was in a marsh by a random kiter.)

How this has worked out thus far? Looks like most on AMZ are waterproof, but meant for basic day-to-day, like walking your dog in the rain, or for your bike. I would want something with a super duper seal. I figure kiters would need to do some kind of mod involving super glue and silicone seals. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I use it to track my luggage during flights. Helps to me to locate when and where my odd-size will arrive and if it is on the plane.

Ok, so I have had the Airtags on now for 10 months and they have been in and out of salt water and hosed down on the boards after sessions. Approx 60 times. Still going fine.
