We are renting a house first week of October with direct access to the sound close to Kitty Hawk Kites. hoping to get some info on other cool places to go besides behind the house? Sound or beach side?
Just about anywhere the wind direction looks good. Stop at REAL and get their map of kiteboarding launch sites. A few obvious favorites.
1. On SW wind, the classic Planet of the Apes downwinder between a turnout south of Salvo and the Salvo Day Use Area, or in your case to your house, is a must. Lots of little slicks on the way down, then a big slick to hang out at, then a downwind channel to jump into and out of, and finally a perpendicular channel that runs all the way through - see the last part of this Cabrinha video with Evan Netsch (5:30 to 7:30 - the very last bit is another undisclosed downwinder) or the classic Langaree video (from back when he was still with Naish and rather more playful in his videos).
2. If you only want to ride in place there are endless possibilities, with many kiters going to Kitepoint between Avon and Buxton, but places like first or second turnouts north of Avon work well, as will your house.
3. Other options on the sound include downwinder from Kitepoint to First or second turnout, or riding in place at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, or even further north in Nags Head if the wind is only strong up there.
4. SW wind on the ocean is best from Hatteras Landing to Frisco bathhouse, but beware, the wind is often much lighter than forecast here and it is a bit of a drive. WindAlert or iKitesurf is your friend here for realtime winds.
On NW wind, anywhere on the sound works, but on NE wind you need to get down to Sandy Bay between Frisco and Hatteras Village, which is a small launch and parking area that gets crowded quickly.
BUT, if it is a good NE the thing to do is oceanside downwinders anywhere on the north part of the island, like ramp 25 to Avon, or Avon to Buxton.
Finally, if you want to explore, Ocracoke island oceanside can be good on SW.
Enjoy, we will be there third week of October, can't wait!
