Do carbon boards make your knees hurt?

Postby GennadyJ » Fri Oct 01, 2021 6:24 pm

I have a carbon board (Cabrinha Ace Carbon 2019) and noticed that after around 1 hour of kitesurfing my knees start to hurt. My friend suggested me to try a non-carbon board since he had the same problem but after switching the boards his knees don’t hurt anymore. I tried his board and it actually felt much better.
Has anyone noticed the same thing? Are non-carbon boards better for your knees?

In general, non-carbon boards are easier on the knees. For example, the carbon version of your Cabrinha Ace is going to be tougher on the knees than the non-carbon version.

But that's not the whole story. Board design drastically effects the impact felt on your knees.

For example, a carbon board with double-concave bottom design may be better on the knees that a non-carbon board with a flat bottom.

I own a carbon Core Fusion 5 (with double-concave bottom), and it's super easy on the knees yet retains the light weight and responsiveness of a carbon board.

I have had great success with carbon boards and currently ride Axis... a couple of things you can try ...change the angle of footstraps and maybe new ones

they can make the boards as soft or hard as they like, carbon or not, it all depends on how stiff (and hard on the knees) the board manufacturers like to make their boards. In general they make the carbon boards stiffer but that's not always true. I believe the carbon crazyfly raptor is supposed to be very easy on the knees, though I didn't demo it long enough to be sure.

Last year I had Naish Monarch 2019. This board has carbon inlays and is a really hard board. However, it is a great board and my knees never hurt even after a few hours in the water. Now I'm riding a Lieuwe Shotgun carbonara. This board is fully carbon. I can fly all day and I don't feel any pain in my knees either. Bindings that must absorb shocks are very important. I have always used Naish Apex.

Not bad for my knees.
Nomad Carbon Wave.
Lots of flex’s in the tips
Lovely on my knees.
Foot straps and pad positioning is also key for protecting knees.

usually branded board are "fake" full carbon. So they're pretty good and smooth, love them

real full carbon of course, u need to consider that aspect

My first carbon board used to be hard on my knees until I changed my landing technique to mostly heliloop back down. This lets me slide onto the water instead of plopping vertically down hard.

Had a similar issue with a flat low rocker light wind twin tip made of wood, was harder to use same solution as chop would catch the tips and make you eat it.

I returned a carbon board a few years ago because it was a rough ride. I now have the latest version of the Shinn Bronq and it is the best twin tip I have ever ridden - great pop, great in the chop and I can ride it all day.

The monarch is a brick. So much pain. It's not because it's carbon they just make it with zero flex. A lot of these wake style boards are only tested in perfectly flat water because you are supposed to be riding them only in the flat not chip and doing handle passes.
