Ozone Enduro and Ozone Alpha overlap

Postby ScottKD » Mon Oct 18, 2021 4:21 am

I'm hoping someone can provide some insight and real experience into the low end overlap of Enduros and Alphas.

I am thinking a quiver of 10m Enduro for freeriding and foiling + 8m Alpha for foiling when it is too much to foil on the Enduro, but not enough for TT on the Enduro.

Generally I know 3 struts have more top end, and 1 struts more bottom end - but is it two sizes worth?

Ozone's website ranks the V3 10m Enduro sweet spot at 18-24 knots on a TT, and the V2 8m Alpha sweet spot at 18-24 knots on a TT - does this translate to range on a foil too? Hence why I'm wondering about overlap on a foil.

The V2 8m Alpha's foil sweet spot is 14-19, but no range is given for the Enduro on a foil.

Thanks in advance.

The Alpha will have a lower low-end than the Enduro. Depending on your weight I would recommend a 10m or 12 Alpha which should get you riding in as low as about 7/8knots when using a big surf hydrofoil. The Enduro is heavier so will need a couple more mph to fly.

My advice would be to buy the Enduro in smaller sizes to use in medium /strong wind. The Enduro will also have a bigger top-end wind range.

Agree with Dave, with bigger sizes 10m and above go alpha, much better light wind relaunch than Enduro. 8m and below Enduro.
I have 10 m Alpha v2 ( also have a mint 10m alpha v1 for sale also an 8m ) now use my 8m v2 Enduro ,great allrounder including foiling and use a 6m PLKB SWELL for windy foiling and surfboard (or all my kites this is my favourite)

Scottkd,
yeah like the others have said... In your specific situation with you wanting your 2 kites to work for both TT and foiling then have the 10m Alpha v2 and Enduro 8m V3 for example as the Alpha will give the better lightwind performance especially when foiling over the Enduro, while Enduro 8m will give better high wind performance on the TT over the Alpha..

Thanks for the feedback - the problem with going 10m Alpha and 8m Enduro is that I would be leaving a whole lot of TT fun on the table. I have a 10m Enduro and have had other 10m 3-struts for the past 5/6 years and have wished I was on an 8m when TT'ing maybe 5 times - even then it's pretty short lived. It's not very often we get over 30 knots sustained wind, and I can hold the 10 through gusts above 30.

This is why I was asking about the overlap of 8m Alpha and 10m Enduro.

Best solution might be two 10m kites, one for foil and one for TT, and a 3-strut 8m that can do both if needed.

It will also depend on your preferred style of hydrofoil riding, your weight, and the wind speeds you typically get in your area.

If you like to hydrofoil on the smallest kite possible and you don't mind sacrificing a bit of low-end then the 8m Alpha will be suitable for hydrofoiling from about 10-12knots upwards... However in this wind speed the 10m Enduro would also work well for hydrofoiling.

If you want to easily hydrofoil in under 10 knots then you could buy a bigger light wind specific kite... for example a 12m Alpha or a 10m to 15m foil kite (e.g Ozone Hyperlink, Ozone Chrono, Flysurfer Soul, Flysurfer Peak 4 etc....). Each If these kites has its own specific advantages and disadvantages so best to do your research.

ScottKd,
Yeah sounds like you need 3 kites. 2 kites for TT and 1 for foiling when really light. Not sure your weight or TT board size but 10/8 Enduro or 11/8 Enduro might be the way to go for TT riding. The Enduros can easily be used for foiling, however once you use a kite like the Ozone Alpha for foiling you feel how light they feel and give a softer pull and you soon realize how this design of kite makes sense for foiling. The Alpha will also work better in the light winds for both water relaunching and general flying over the Enduro. I have the Ozone Alpha V1 10m and just recently added the Alpha V2 8m which i only really use for foiling. The 10m i use from about 10-16kts and the 8m plan to use from about 17 to 23kts. My first session recently on the Alpha V2 8m foiling was in 18-22kts and this was well lit.

ScottKd, Had my 2nd go on the Alpha V2 8m on a TT playing around in the surf in 21-25kts onshore winds. Other riders were on 9-14m. Wasnt sure if it would be enough power, but it was fine ie moderately powered. The Alpha V2 loops and turns great and was a lot of fun carving the waves. I did not jump do any jumps. Was on 23m lines and the bridle setting were moved to the onshore setting. Was very impressed how this kite performed on the TT in these conditions, as I would have normally chosen to be on an Enduro style kite and as mentioned my initial intensions for the Alpha 8m were for foiling.

Thanks IWB2 - great to get some real world feedback. I'm 85 kg and have a 140x42 TT and 1000cm2 / 1500cm3 foil.

I am leaning toward the two 10's, one for TT and one for foil, and one 8m that does both.
