Ion Apex 7, 2019, harness wear

Postby Dimitrios » Mon Oct 18, 2021 2:03 pm

Well my harness after couple of seasons is looking like this and i feel in another couple of years there will be nothing left now that the inner material started showing...

I have seen much cheaper harnesses to last 10 years and not wearing down like this. (They were mostly covered with this rubbery material however instead of this cloth that mine has at the top part). But still, im not really keen of this wear, and feels like something companies could have foreseen happening. Feels like a downgrade in quality.

Any ideas how i can prevent it from getting worst? was thinking to stitch something on top, but im worried i will rip the cloth where i pierce it with the needle.

Doesn't look great, but neither too bad... dollop of glue? Patch of Tear-Aid over the damaged area? Should be OK

Many brands have neoprene lining or it's focused around the edges. Wear and tear is normal, but environmental factors can also accelerate problems that are prone to happen. I've also seen back-access wetsuits causing accelerated wear from the center zipper location. There's not much you can do at this point except for repairing the harness till it's toasted. Gearaid's Aquaseal FD is what I use to repair any neoprene abrasion wear or full on tears.

LOL My Ion Apex has plenty of those worn spots. Probably five seasons in mine. It doesn't look good, but it works just fine.

The adjusting strap also worn out way too quickly compared to other brands. I've had harnesses that lasted years and years and I ditched them because they became obsolete. The Apex belt worn out at the point where it rubbers with the latch. It's about to snap, so now I'm leaving the right side fix and adjusting from the left side.

If you care about the look, then you should start looking for a new harness, probably different brand.
If look is not important, then I guess it still has plenty of life left. Mine looks much worse than that and still works.

Thanks for your replies guys. Nah its not about how it looks but i dont want it to be half destroyed in couple of years. So i will try to repair with one of the methods the guys above mentioned.

This is what my Ion Apex looks like after four or five Florida seasons. I do about 60-70 sessions per year. Still works fine for me, an average Joe rider.
Very good harness, just not a long lasting one.
