Are my pigtails dangerously worn?

Postby sergei Scotland » Thu Nov 11, 2021 3:49 pm

These pigtails on the end of my bar lines have a couple of spots were they bend very easily. Feels like they are "broken" inside.
I have replaced them but was not sure if they are still basically OK?
Sometimes you get the same effect on kite 's connections which are much more difficult to replace, hence the question.

Bar is 4 years old but was only used a lot for 2 years:

Yes, if you see many fibers sticking out away from the line, it is faded in the case of colored line, it is time to change the line out. If you see a broken bunch of fibers like in the first photo, it is past time to replace it.

Worn, yes, a bit. Dangerously? No. Those things are overbuilt for durability and can take a lot of punishment before failing.

If the "bend" or inside "break" that you're feeling is in the center of the pigtails (as it appears in the photos), it's probably the point where the line splices have ended and the line isn't doubled within itself. I've used many a pigtail that looks worse than yours. Personally, I wouldn't worry about them.

That said, pigtails are inexpensive so, if you're worried about them, a few bucks buys you peace of mind.

Agreed. Though it's always wise to replace when in doubt.

Not so bad these are like 2400lbs breaking strength, your weight is on 4 of them , you have like 95% of the fibers left they are good for a while! You can get new ones for 10$ on Aliexpress so I would get new one but don't worry you can still ride...

Most of the frayed bits in the first picture are just the end of the splice sticking out a bit, but I agree with the advice that it is better to replace things too soon rather than too late.

In over 20 years, I have never experienced a failure at the pigtails, so if you are worried about a failure, this might be a good time to inspect the flying lines, and maybe consider replacing them as well.

I've had one or more of the flying lines fail a few times, and every single time it was exciting, but not fun.
