Yes, if you see many fibers sticking out away from the line, it is faded in the case of colored line, it is time to change the line out. If you see a broken bunch of fibers like in the first photo, it is past time to replace it.

Just to clarify - The 2 photos show the same pair of pigtails from the front lines. From different angles.
As I said I already replaced them.
I have a bit of similar damage on one of my kites where bridle connects to the tube's very short "pigtail".
I will get a picture of those this weekend. Those are probably impossible to replace.

Those end bits are because they didn't taper the ends of the rope when they finished the splice. It's only cosmetic. Pigtails are many times stronger than the lines connected to them. But, as people have said, they're cheap. Buy some new ones.

Or better still, buy some 3mm Dyneema and learn to splice and make your own. You can properly taper the ends and overlap them so there's no thin bit in the middle and no sticky outy bits.

In over 20 years, I have never experienced a failure at the pigtails, so if you are worried about a failure, this might be a good time to inspect the flying lines, and maybe consider replacing them as well.

dont be so sure.. core pig tails on both center lines failed at the same time.. about 1 year old.. did not look as frayed as the OP picture..

I've had a pigtail snap too. IMHO it was because the end of the bury wasn't tapered nicely.

I'm guessing they've buried both ends right in the center there, so just the fraying ends of the tails poking out...

But it looks a bit "creased" there, I wouldn't want to risk it on a big air day.

Yes, I understood the shots were of the same pigtails. Years back I had some pigtail failures. More importantly I tracked some kite accidents after they broke. You don't want to push your luck with questionable line materials putting your kite and/or yourself, bystanders, etc. at risk. Most kite bridles can be replaced in my experience. Bridle line wear is more uncommon but in older kites I guess it can happen. Anyway, your instincts are good particularly in acting before a failure. Good luck with the bridles.

Thanks. This is a very convincing documented confirmation they can actually be dangerous. 2 at the same time!!!

Thanks. This (your reason for your pigtail failure) seems to be exactly the same in my case.
Those pigtail came with my Blade Unibar V2 bar from 2016 or 2017.
The lines and the bar seem to be still in a very good condition. Depower rope was replace once as started slipping a bit after 3 years.
But those pigtail felt like they had a bendy point in them from the very start.
Just thought it might help other users of this bar.
