Car roof straps advice

Postby Topaz » Tue Nov 16, 2021 8:27 pm

Hello, I got a set of straps to tie down the gear to the car roof racks, but the latch is made of metal and it leaves marks in the roof every time I drop them. I know, I shouldn't drop them, but it happens anyways.

I had these very old Mistral branded plastic straps that worked fine for years, but now the latches are broken.

Anybody knows of any straps with plastic latches? Or anything that doesn't scratch the car paint?

thanks

These work great...you can toss them across your roof to the other side of car with no worries about scratches.

Yakima quality!!!

Chinook straps are the bomb. The neoprene with velcro closure covers the buckle.

Simple, make your own covers. I cut out two 5" x 3" rectangular sections from an old wetsuit. Use hockey tape to wrap one side of the rectangle to the side to the strap at the base of the buckle. The "open" side of the rectangle should sit under the buckle and protect your paint. That's how I did it when my 15 year old strap covers wore off. They still work just fine.
