Still no supposedly stronger frames etc on either the orbit or super model that came first and second. So worth the extra £300 odd a kite?

Janek won the event and Liam came in a close second. Unfortunately, all of the judges appear to be in the Sponsor's pocket.
When Janek learns how to megaloop, he'll win. That's assuming he can still do half his tricks with a proper loop. Josh will win when they hold the comp in 50kn.

Take a look at who sponsored the event last year and this year...then take a look at who won the events last year and this year.
Guess someone forgot to tell the judges about Porsche/Duotone sponsorship. Whoops!

Jesse was the best rider last year. I don't know who else you could even consider winning. All the riders feared him from the start of the comp and considered him the person to beat. Marc was the best rider this year. Liam was a very close second, but Marc was a more complete rider with the addition of his contras.
One thing that appears to have been highlighted was that stronger lighter what ever doesn’t suddenly make the kites perform better than the ordinary material old ones made of like the orbit especially for the ridiculous price hikes some of these companies charging.
How do you figure ? The best stronger lighter superior material in the comp was on the Aluula Rise that Giel Vlugt rode. A rider who has never even made it into KOTA and lost BAKL switched into a first generation kite design and immediately went to 4th place in KOTA. Thats amazing.

SLS using the Challenger fabric is a placeholder; its why they marketed a moniker instead of using the name of a material (so they could change to a diff material in the future that had those properties).

The Orbit is using an N-75 lightweight Dacron so its on the bandwagon as well.

No idea what (if anything new) the Supermodel is using on its LE past plain Dacron. That spot is just KL’s skill.

I've also seen that Ocean Rodeo is claiming that Giel Vlugt is 4th in the KOTA. But all we know is that he was second in his semi final (just like Liam and Josh). So they're all 4th. And even if we look to the semi final scores, Liam is ahead. But still a very good performance !

Look at this amazing trick from Liam!

I didn't see it in the comp...he is board off rotating upside down!

Unbelievable!

Soooo much more to come!

Yeah, he and Marc were the only ones really doing inverted board offs. Josh's psycho late back was inverted, but I think that's expected when your kite goes lower than the rider!

I fail to see how Janek got knocked out by Josh Emmanuel.
Was on the beach and completely agree. Janek deserved podium at least! He went massive and did tricks people didn't even understand what or how. Full control, superb style. He was even better than Kevin and Nick's heat that came after, and they got more wind. Janek would have killed it even more if he had had proper winds... Joshua threw is regular aggressive boogy loops, but nothing new, while Janek was a wizard pulling one crazy trick after the other. Everyone on the beach was surprised.
Agree with this assessment 100%.
To quote Marc in one of his interviews, as per the briefing prior to the event:
"They really want to see the power and extremity with the height of the megaloops. I didn't add extra rotations like I normally do."

So Marc rode to the event. He dumbed down his "Janek style" rotations just to fit more with the judging criteria. Jesse commented about this repeatedly in the past year if you listen to the MegaPod. He kept trying to do what he thought the judges should want to see, rather than what they asked to see. It wasn't until he realised this that he won his second title. Marc mentioned this as well where he kept trying to be innovative rather than just going for height, hence relearning how to ride switch to hit kickers.

The livestream announcers constantly spoke about how the judges were really looking at kite angle this year versus years past. Josh's extreme style was more to the judging criteria, so he won. If the judging criteria changes or he learns to do lower kiteloops, Janek will certainly win in the next couple years.

at least I am happy that we see different styles. For us spectators more show, and that's what counts for us ;-)

If everyone does the same, we would get bored quickly, like back then with megaloop competitions in boots only...or freestyle.

If the judges are going to score old-fashioned powered kiteloops over innovation (i.e. this year's Contraloops with multiple rotations) then 2 things will happen:
1. KOTA innovation will stagnate as riders abide by the judges' criteria.
2. Many viewers will stop watching. We all tune in to see something we can't do and have never seen before.

Just like in every other extreme sport (wakeboarding, skateboarding, moto x, etc.) we all tune in to see the next level trick - riders pushing it to the limit. Nobody wants to see a skater win an X-Games with a 900. Why? Because Tony Hawk did it in 1999. Same goes for powered kiteloops.

If the judges aren't rewarding the next level tricks...then the judges are doing it wrong.
