January destination with 6 months old?

Hi,

My girlfriend and I are planning on going on a kite trip with our 6 months old son in January.
We don't know where though! Can anyone help? :D
We live in Denmark and want to go somewhere
  • - with decent medical facilities if anything should go wrong
    - relatively warm - but without 15-20+hrs flights
    - with accomodation right at the spot (so we can just go straight to the beach and launch
And then there's ofc the covid situation as well...

For all those reasons, we have looked mainly at

Fuerteventura (can you even stay right in front of any spot here?)
El Medano, Tenerife (here we found accomodation right at the spot)
El Gouna, Egypt

It's not main season in January for any of those spots. So have anyone been there in January who can comment on the conditions?
Which should we go with?
Or any alternatives?

Thanks!!!

/Johan

As far as I know you are more or less completely off season at all those spots?

Langebaan I guess would be cool with a baby. Quiet place. Shouldn't be hard to find a place to stay within walking distance from the spot. Not sure how easy it is to get to CT these days though from Denmark.

I have travelled in January/February for many years now. Not that many spots with good wind. Langebaan is probably were I would go if I was going with a baby - even if the flight is long. Usually it is the rest of the passengers that suffers though

Yeah didn’t look too good when I checked first either. But after asking around a bit it sounds like you can expect wind around every second day in the Canary Islands at that time of year … not so sure about El Gouna though.

Will check Langebaan too, but have considered it a bit too far away tbh ;)
Thanks!

I went to El Medano in Tenerife with a 9 month old. Its not quite the same as he was a lot more awake at 9months than at 6 months but it might be useful.

Positives:
- Not much time difference so no problems adjusting.
- Sheltered beach area available (by the hotel)
- Short drive from the airport
- Easy to get to.
- Lots of rental accommodation available
- Lots to see and do in Tenerife - particularly if you take a baby carrier and don't mind hiking.
- Nice cafe culture so easy to stop for feeding breaks
- 12 hours of day and night so easy to get full nights of sleep out of little ones.
- Usual european brand shops stocking the same items you might have at home.
- For some reason Gin isn't taxed (or is suspiciously cheap) so good Gin and Tonic is cheap at the supermarket
- Fast internet is available

Drawbacks:
- Not that much beach at high tide
- Not the flattest water and busy at the launch spot
- Can be hit and miss with the wind. However, the forecast model is pretty good (accurate) so I've always been able to pack the night before leaving and get kit about right (you might need a hydrofoil - you might need a 7m kite but I've always been able to get 3 or 4 days out of 6 even at that time of year by packing appropriate kite gear).
- Tenerife isn't designed around push chairs (except Playa de las Americas which is wheel chair friendly)
- Relatively small sweet spot of accommodation for walking to the beach

In retrospect, the 3-4 hour flight was as much as I'd have been willing to do (more than once). With that flight time we could just about limp through a poor nap without getting too over tired. Remember you probably have a 2 hour wait in your departure airport and at least one hour between getting off the airplane and getting to your apartment so you have a travel time of 7-8 hours in reality. With a longer flight I think it would have killed off one or two days of holiday just getting him rested again so he wasn't waking more often than normal in the night and I wouldn't have been tired on the water.
