Crazyfly Raptor 2021 vs North Atmos Hybrid 2021

Postby szert » Mon Jan 10, 2022 1:41 am

Looking for advice on my new twintip.

I've shortlisted two boards on sale in my budget:
  • Crazyfly Raptor 2021 140x42
  • North Atmos Hybrid 2021 141x42 - it's slightly more expensive
Crazyfly Raptor Ltd full carbon also available at the same price as the Atmos Hybrid. But I don't think I need full carbon, as I understood carbon version is more rigid (which I don't need) and less durable (?) .

Any tips to choose the right one?

I'm leaning towards the Raptor if the two are roughly the same experience as Crazyfly has 3 yrs warranty (?)

Btw, anyone knows the weight of the Atmos? Raptor spec is 2.6kg

Background:
I'm b/w 86-92kg, 184cm.
I freeride, small jumps (4m consistently, max ~5m & not aiming much higher), choppy (UK), some wave riding and plenty of downwinders on holidays
Current board is 142x44 Stryder and its delamination getting beyond repair (how many times I can epoxy it..). I also tend to take my gf's board (136 x 40) when overpowered.

szert,

Great short list - you really can't go wrong. these are fantastic choices. I am a loyal CF Carbon guy truly the best board ever exact same size - I will never not have this board. Can't comment directly on the Atmos but my buddies ride it and love love love it too - very comparable rides. Do go full carbon tho - its fully worth it - not too stiff - the carbon soaks up the chop and the pop and energy in the board is other worldly.

Get it while it's hot...

Mc

I own both these boards ('22 Atmos Hybrid instead of the '21 now, but it's the exact same board layup with different graphics). The Raptor is a little stiffer ride than the Atmos, but I think the Atmos accelerates a bit quicker and is a little more playful.

If you're a beginner or lose your board often, think about the bottom colour and how easy it will be to find. As for carbon vs not.. I owned an Atmos Carbon and tried a Raptor LTD Neon before getting the standard version. The Atmos Carbon is basically the same performance as the hybrid, except lighter. The Raptor LTD ride is noticeably stiffer than standard and I didn't notice any real performance difference, other than the weight and harsher ride quality. The one drawback of the Atmos is that it's a bit fragile. Just about anything will nick it, whereas the Raptor is pretty solid and hardly shows a scratch after a year of riding (the base hides minor scratches really well).

In a quick performance overview:
1. Upwind: Same
2. Pop: Slight edge Atmos
3. Acceleration/Speed: Edge Atmos
4. Ride: Edge Atmos
5. Grip: Slight edge Raptor

Non-performance overview:
1. Visibility: Raptor
2. Durability: Raptor

With the brand's shipped bindings installed (because I can't be fucked removing them to get their weights)
CF Raptor 137x41: 4.2kg
North Atmos Hybrid 138x41: 4.5kg
I much prefer the North bindings over the CF ones, but bindings are very personal to feet size/shape.

You can't go wrong with either board. Overall performance is extremely similar. I'd probably go with the cheaper Raptor for the non-performance reasons, even though I prefer the Atmos.

Long time ltd rider.Agree with the above comments. One thing to consider, the bigger ltd's are not as stiff as the smaller ones.

Haven't had the chance to try the atmos eventho my local shop has it for demo, but did test the raptor extreme and the standard raptor (my go to board) also had a go on a friend carbon Jaime. In overall the raptor as that locked in feel (helped me to hold down more power), tons of grip and feedback at the expense of comfort, you have to give it a good kick to throw it around, the jaime felt more playfull but with less feedback and grip. My local shop has said that the atmos is softer overall compared to the raptor, so its down to what's more important to you, loads of grip and feedback with less comfort, or little less feedback and grip with slightly more comfort. Also as mentioned above, the raptor is rock solid, over a year using mine with some encounters with hidden rocks during low tides and the board still solid with just few scrachtes well hidden by the glideskin bottom layer. In my opinion CF gear is quite solid and sturdy and im talking about boards and kites, not a fan of the bar tho but all my CF gear has never given me problems.

Thanks all, it's all very useful!

Raptor it is then.

But you made me reconsider if I should rather go for the LTD, £90 difference. The only first world doubt left is the colour (the NEON is not on sale). I rarely separate from my board too far but I still had a couple of challenging body dragging search on downwinders. This blueish grey possibly the worst colour choice for board design and I have black bindings. Maybe some bright tape could help. Though it wouldn't help if upside down.

Remember that the raptor is a totally different board than the raptor ltd. I remember back when I bought my ltd that many complained that the standard raptor had the evil "spray up into your face " attribute. May be different now though.

Never had a problem with spray on the normal Raptor.

If I remember correctly you had to be going at least 10 mph for it to happen :o

Just joking !
