Kite Weight Database

Postby CaptainKook » Sat Jan 15, 2022 10:24 am

Hi all

With the development of materials and coatings on kites, the recent marketing trends are increases in material strength and kite / airframe strength and overall kite weight reduction.

Does anyone know of a combined database of weights of kites from all leading manufacturers.

Some manufacturers post kite weights on their websites, some do not.

As we are paying a lot of money for 'high performance equipment', claiming to be 'lighter' which justifies the extortionate prices, shouldn't we the customers request manufacturers publish the weight of every kite in their lineup?

This would not only help with transparency and educate customers in a purchase decision, but also hold manufacturers to account in terms of their marketing, and price justification.

If you're buying a 14m light wind kite, wouldn't it be better to know the actual weights of all kites available. Rather than accepting X kite is simply 'the lightest' because X manufacturer tells us that, and that in itself justifies it costing twice as much.

Various industries all publish the weights of products - mountain bikes, snowboards, cars, hiking equipment, golf equipment, running shoes - it's pretty easy to obtain weights for products in these industries.

Not so IMO for all kite manufacturers, and certainly not in all sizes.

If manufacturers are not willing to publish these weights and own their products, is it possible for us to put a database together with dry kite weights for all brands and sizes?

Maybe some readers with tech/coder skills could make some suggestions as to how we could compile this.

I feel this would create more transparency for customers buying products that cost thousands of hard earned 💰💰💰

There is one old list: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mRG7HGS-IIBMEcPUiGwpRtZaBxHN1kLdPELVKn8b3Ck/edit#gid=0

I'm also wondering how hard is it to tell the kite weight..
Flysurfer is one of the manufacturers who give all the data on their websites. Good job flysurfer :)
