Puerto Rico - Las Picuas questions

Postby dfackler4 » Sun Jan 16, 2022 11:12 pm

Hi all,

I'm visiting PR for 4-5 days next weekend (traveling down 1/28). Will be staying in the Ocean Park area and may try to get some sessions in that area but I'm most interested in hopefully catching a session or two at Las Picuas.

Couple of quick questions:

i) Have looked at the aerial pics that have been posted for this spot - are there any parking restrictions to be concerned about here? Last thing I want to do is get towed or have some sort of issue. There seem to be a couple of different roads that lead to the beach (not completely visible from Google satellite), is it obvious once you get close?

ii) Is the San Juan Buoy station the best to look at to get a sense of current conditions at Las Picuas? I assume most ideal directions for this spot are NE, ENE, E.

iii) Any good low/no wind day activity suggestions? Ideally I want to kite but was thinking of doing an efoil session or maybe a good scuba dive if kiting isn't an option.

Thanks in advance,

No problem with towing if you stay in the little access road. I think it’s in the spots section of kiteforum, where the spot is marked.

I love this spot.

Don’t know about the other questions you have.

Just a heads up PR started requiring 7 day quarantine for the unvaccinated , even with a negative test within 72 hours…

Toby - thanks for the info, yes I've seen the videos really hoping to get to experience it as well!

Darippah, yes I actually scheduled my PCR test today for next week (I'm vaxxed), hoping the process through the airport isn't too much of a pain.

The fastest way through the airport is to generate your QR code before the entry. https://www.travelsafe.pr.gov/
Otherwise you’ll be sitting and filling as long yet a paper form instead of picking your bags.
You will be also asked for vaccination card/picture at most restaurants

@Toby, is it too shallow to foil at Las Picuas? I've checked the spot page and it mentions good flat water, but it doesn't mention how deep it is.

It looks like the rest of the bay should be deep enough (outside of the flat-water section), but I want to double-check before we only bring foil gear.

Thanks!

Good question, don't remember.
I think the east part is very shallow, but further west is deeper.

The bay all the way to the east is deep for sure.
