help me with wetsuit sizing

Postby pb » Wed Apr 06, 2022 10:14 pm

i'm tall slim dude never wore wetsuit before, watched some videos about choosing rigt size but still little bit confused.

so, referring to ION's size chart best size for me would be ST (small tall)
problem is, that size is impossible to find.
should regular sizes like S or M fit me well?
i'm buying online.

my specs:
height: 194cm | 6'4''
weight: 74kg | 163lbs
chest: 94cm | 37''

I bet S and M, maybe even L would be too short. If you could find local shop with different sizes to try. But at the moment it's hard to find anything from anywhere

What is your waist size? What temps?
Wetsuits are like gloves, you really want to find a cut that fits your body shape. I have no experience with Ion. Some relatively inexpensive wetsuits that I have considered are hyperflex, needessentials, and neilpryde. Some vendors will let you return the suit if it has not touched water.
I suspect your best bet would be a MT. If it is too baggy in the chest, wear an impact vest inside your suit. I intentionally order up a size so I can wear an impact vest inside my suit. This gives more comfort while wearing a harness.
In my experience a tight wetsuit wears out faster (busted seams). If the wetsuit fits a little looser, the integrity of the suit tends to last longer.

I’m 6’2” 210 and wear an XL

I guess you’re way slimmer but I would recommend going to a shop and trying them on as opposed to buying online. You don’t have local shops?

Sorry if not helpful

I have a similar build: 190cm/75KG
The right size is MT for me for the brands that I tried.
However do note that some brands can be a bit more “baggy” then others.
eg the Patagonia is a good fit for me, srface as well but prolimit build seems a little bit too loose for me with some flushing as a result.
So your mileage may vary and as said above I would highly recommend fitting in a store or make sure there is a good return policy even if you use it for one or two sessions.

In last 5 years wetsuits become so stretchy that some size variations become less important. If in doubt- I normally choose smaller- I hate baggy feeling of wetsuit- I can sacrifice longevity because I like warmth :)

But different makers have different cuts. L at one can be MT for another. Since you do not fit in standard- if I were you- would invest in a local shop trip, you can find the best fit and skip headaches if you need to return wetsuit and choose size up or down. I bought first one online, but fit was not right despite 10 times measure. Now I have found brand that makes right size for me and I can buy online without worry.

I find you have to shop around to find a brand that fits your build. The measurements on the size guides are normally correct and I wouldn't want to go too far off the sizes in more than one area (e.g. might be fine if chest is slightly big but waist and height are spot on) but I'd ignore a brand if I fall inbetween sizes.

If you can't find the size for sale anywhere you either need to wait for the new product launch for the year or shop other brands.

+1
I ordered a bunch of different brands from wetsuit wear house in same size/ thickness but quickly found the one that fit me best and returned the rest. Surprising degree of fit/ comfort difference- based on what’s important to you.
I also found I didn’t like the tightness of the size that the chart recommended for me and bumped up a little (from MS to M) - trade off was comfort for a little more flushing.
Also depends how thick a suit you want- thinner ones are more stretchy and less critical, so you can take a snugger fit- thicker ones you have to get right.
It’s really down to your preference.

Tough call!
P.S. If you don't find anything that fits you well, I know people who do 'made to measure' wetsuits in Europe.
P.S.S. Just ran into a friend who's 190/75kg - Mystic Majestic 5/4 LT fits him good, just a bit loose in the torso.

I'm 175/75kg and have a ION Strike Core 4/3 ST which fits me well and is just a bit too long (arms & legs).
MT should be OK for 185-190cm, but I'm afraid a tad too loose for you.
Check ION ONYX MT - they have more snug fit than STRIKE. ONYX was discontinued last year, so good luck finding one.
You can also check Hurley. They have (or had) quite a slim fit.

The only non-standard size for tall skinny build I know of is LTS from ISURUS.

MT would probably be the closest non-custom fit for you.
