What would be some good board suggestions for a 190lb/86KG rider? I'd start by using it in lighter winds. I think the option of straps would be good too.

Get a cheap used surfboard maybe 5’7” to 6’3” and 19-21 wide and beat the hell out of it, ride it like you stole it until it breaks and it will. Repeat as necessary with many different shapes until you find one you really like. Just my opinion, you’ll get plenty.

I have a 2020 Duotone Profish 5'5" 29lt for sale..Excellent for low end, learning footwork, small to med waves. No straps but in light and moderate waves and wind there is really no need. This is a board you will not outgrow like others..

The same question also from me who by the way have the same exact weight. But because we don't have proper waves here (just a few days of small waves, usually the water is just a lot choppy) I was thinking of getting a shinnster for my first strapless board and use it also for light wind days. Any thoughts?
P.S. Because of lack of waves there is not a local market of cheap used surfboards.

Get a "standard" classic shaped board 5'5 to 5'10, with straps.
Forget about surfboards, they wont hold up long, nor work with straps.
I can not answer the latest poster, as he wants to go strapless - but for you, get a classic not too rockered waveboard from any brand.
You can ride faster, turn more aggressive - even jump if you want to, but at least make big aerials even on kneehigh waves.
No downsides at all.

What kind of water are you riding in? Chop, waves, or flat? This will determine if you want a flat nose or pointed. For someone your size, regular surfboard would probably 5'8'' ish. I am 160 lbs and ride a 5'6''. I'd recommend buying a decent used board and get used to the feel of a surfboard, take a look at kiteforum.com. Straps are your choice, but I'd say learn without, and decide later.

I would get FireWire EVo or a Naish skater shape.
The Evo is amazing ! strapless which is easier to do foot switches - no straps in the way.

That is only when tacking, for jibes there is nothing in the way

If you start using it in light winds...do not take it too small or a more fish shape which is wide and flat rocker....a regular surfboard has too much rocker and you may brake them is real surfboard.
get some 5.8 and 55cm wide or a 6.00 which may not have top much roacker a Fone fish >5.6 is alos a good lightwind beginnerboard
Cheers

I own an old Slingshot Verve 6'0. I am still using it to learn new tricks on it, ride small waves and light wind. Very satisfied with this board.
This board can be ridden with straps or strapless, I personally prefer strapless. On my first days of learning how to ride a surfboard I tried with straps, but I removed them after a couple of sessions. I felt that they did not give me enough freedom to move my feet on the board.
I do not know what modern board would be the equivalent to this one on the Slingshot surfboard lineup.
