Texas kiting and windsurfing

Postby exhibitpro » Tue Apr 26, 2022 6:57 pm

Hi All, My wife and I are heading to Texas (SPI, Corpus, Bird Island) in May. I kite and windsurf and my wife windsurfs only. I'm looking for launches the allow both and that are waist deep (my wife is 5' tall) so that she is happy. Happy wife allows happy husband to buy more gear... Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Check kiteboarding.com they have all the Corpus spots. SPI is not as good unless you want to the surf now. The north flats are closed basically to most people. There is another spot further north but you need a 4x4 to get in to it. The south flats has a horrible wind shadow. Houston has some spots as well you can find a map of the those at houstonkiteboarding.com all are open but El Jardine due to construction.

Bird Island does not allow kiteboarding, but is famous windsurfing spot with great onsite rental shop.

In CC - Bird is awesome for flat water windsurf and a top place to learn wing foil. The main kite spots in CC don’t attract a lot of windsurfers due to either too shallow or chop.

You might have to learn to wing if you want to give your wife what she wants in CC.

If you are in the Corpus area May 26-30th there are some events that Kiteboarding.com is putting on. No affiliation with them, but Jeff Howard and his crew are good folks that have promoting and supporting kiting since the beginning and now are into winging. Below is a link with some more info about the event. Safe Travels! Dave H

Thanks for the input Wolkster, and Jakemoore. Not sure I'll cancel kiting and try a wing yet, I still really love my surfboard. Dave_H, thanks for the tip for kiteboarding.com. Definitely good people there, I'll check it out.

Jeff from Kiteboarding.com is amazing - he got me flying on my very first kitefoil session ever when I was over in TX for a business trip. Definitely get in touch with him.

Second what everyone has said about Corpus. Can find wind on many directions. Haven’t been to SPI since the flats closed, but save the drive and find all that the CC area has to offer. Looking forward to the downwinder and demo days with kiteboarding.com!!
