Anyone use climbing helmet kiting?

Postby knot_moving » Tue May 10, 2022 4:46 am

Friend recently had a launch kite mare. Front line snagged on something in grass and next thing kite is zooming thru power zone and he ends up with eye damage and a concussion while wearing a helmet. Would have been much worse without.

So if I am gonna wear a helmet full time I want something more comfortable than my current helmet & I am also about to buy a lightweight climbing helmet anyway. Like it to do double duty.

Seems like it would fit the bill for kiting. Am I missing something obvious.
… and oh yeah - we are setting up tethers for launching & landing at our regular spots.
… here is helmet I am looking at

Wow, that IS a nice and light Helmet...

I can not Help...

But possible Points to consider:
- safer than nothing on the beach
- Not sure about fit: I Like my Gath, as it sits super secure around my head, without adjusting anything. Even with hard slams IT stays on pretty good. I get a hard slams, every 10 Minutes.

Wish I had one of those 15 years ago for climbing.👍

In my opinion helmets in kitesurfing are now a must not only because of possibility of kitemares but also foil kiters / foil windsurfers that are zooming around at 20kn with basically a metal sword at water level.
I used a prolimit water helmet from REI for several years, then I borrowed my son's skating helmet from Decathlon (Oxelo) which was 1/3 of the cost and even more comfortable. Been kiting with it like 4 years + , still works fine so I can't find a reason to buy a new one! And yes I crash as hard as anyone and never had an issue from bucketing or such.

I've used a similar helmet for years. Pretty comfy. No issues. Definitely better than nothing. Maybe a watersports helmet is safer, since it has a little floatation and is more likely to keep your mouth out of the water if you're unconscious? I use mine with this sun brim: https://dabrim.com/collections/frontpage/products/rezzo

I go by https://projectsurfhelmet.com/ and use a Gamebreaker Pro. Not a kite specific helmet but I like it

One reason to wear a helmet is to protect eardrums. Climbing helmet does not have the ear pads (maybe they can be added?).
Other reasons to wear helmet: 2) Protect my bald from sunburns. 3) Gopro mount. 4) Project the head

I got exostosis from a few decades of wind/kitesurfing. Definitely cover your ears if you can! I use a lycra headband I wear under the helmet.

This list of helmets and review is so wrong or for surfing only. At the very least the helmet should be EN 1385 rated.
