Hi, you can do assistant and instructor courses separately if you plan to work as an assistant to gain experience but schools offer to do both in 2 weeks including first aid.

Most of the theory is in the assistant course. At the instructor course you will have a little more theory but you will have real students to work with. You will have to show that you can kite at level 4 meaning a small jump with grab, toe side, jibe and the most important, retrieve a board and a person.

There’s 3 different memberships, Create your account at IKO and have a look. You don’t need to teach every year to keep your licence.

When I took the IKO instructor course, in 2010, having the assistant course was not a requirement, but maybe recommended.

As I recall, we got paired up as two instructors giving a lesson, or some portion of a lesson....and at first I was totally lost.

The guy I got paired up with had gotten the assistant certification, and had real working experience as an assistant in the gorge.

I had over ten years kite surfing experience at the time, but it is one thing to do it, and another thing to teach how to do it.

So me, personally, I was lucky enough to learn a lot, very quickly, from the guy with the assistant certification.

That's the point of IKO and PASA.

If you pass their certification, they have negotiated available insurance.

I took the IKO instructor course in 2010, but I have since decided that I prefer not to work when it's windy.

i have thought of teaching as a side hustle, but the thought of getting sued just isn't worth it for me.

I understand the concept but also know that lawyers chase money and the path of least resistance. Even defending yourself from frivolous charges can cost a fortune. And the only people who suck more than lawyers are insurance companies. If I ever do decide to teach, I would absolutely have my students sign a waiver understanding the risk and protecting me from any personal liability.
