Learn to strapless foil. I don't know of any ankle or knee injuries from my foiling friends.

Very true...although I'd be more concerned about something like this

Holy shit. What’s the story behind this? I need to know so I can try NOT to duplicate that.

The first 2-5 years of kiting knees will hurt it's normal. It's the process of adaptation to the kiteboarding exercise. If you're not pushing it like the pros doing extreme megaloops and huge unhooked stuff then there is not much to worry about.
Jogging is worst for the knees in my opinion.
Unless you mess up flying the kite/slack the lines, there is no risk to your knees. Unhooked is much more brutal with constant 2-3m unsupported landings. That will take a toll.

Agreed. Much worse. Unless you're riding in heavy chop on a stiff freestyle board.

Oh yeah and about how to prevent knee injuries that was a good point by blackened. If you ride in chop get a medium to soft flex board. Non carbon. Makes a huge difference.
Don't look at pros as an example. They push limits and getting seriously hurt is part of the game. I also had ACL surgery. Broke both of my ankles. Twice. And almost all my toes. Ribs, shoulder, back and so on. But they heal. Im still kiting and biking strong in my late 40s.

If you are a casual rider non of these can probably happen to you, but on the other hand, you are human. You break. You heal. Its part of the game. Accept it. Digg it. You are excercising an extreme sport. Things can go wrong.
Do you drive a car? I guess yes, so you know you have more chances of getting serioussly hurt in a car accident or even die, right? You drive everyday? Just saying :)

Ride Mako, save your knees
No, that hype is 15 years late and not true... Ride an hydrofoil, less resistance and half size kite used.
yeah, this is the real answer. i love riding my foil after big twin tip days... helps recover and change the pace
