Just wanted to share my work on my kite gear- anybody out there who has same solutions/thoughts/problems?
The situation: 2 kids and kitesurfing Greece for 6months while working remote.
Had a hatchback (beautiful), then a station wagon (very fast) in the past but both were to small. So I got a 4x4.
The roofbox (biggest Thule): 6 kites + 2 twintips + 8neopren suits + basically ALL the kite gear you need.
Special solution: on top I mounted a Thule sup carrier for my surfboard. That was a little work: take sup carrier, saw it down and remount everything to be more thin for the surfboard. In the roofbox I had to make an arch inside to carry the extra load out of aluminium. If you have any question there feel free to check in for more detailed information.
The car: biggest trunk of all Full size cars. Only bigger: vans (not suitable for beach driving) and pickups with extra box on top. So I hot this lbs rover discovery 5 used from Germany. Nice bF Goodrich tires, lift kit, and sand boards (arb tred pro) on top. Now I’m able to go down to every beach. The trunk is reserved for 4x big suitcases+ 8 north face duffel bags.
(Not kite related: instead of a hitch-mounted bike carrier I got one from Thule which sits on the tailgate. Pro: Park distance and camera work also off-road no limitation contra: tailgate won’t open anymore. I actually got a shower curtain Strech bar to keep it open while bikes are mounted).
