Gulf Shores/Orange Beach/Dauphin Island

Postby redskykiter » Mon Jun 13, 2022 12:56 am

My wife and I are going to visiting the in-laws in Foley, Alabama soon (June or July)
I'm looking for gear recommendations to bring if any. I know it is out of season. Any help is appreciated.
Thank you

I lived in Mobile in the 90s and Fairhope was a great place to windsurf in the summer months--a strong thermal funnels N->S thru Mobile Bay on many days. I don't know about kiting access, however.

The gulf coast is an underappreciated kiting spot. If you can make it out to Dauphin Island, I've heard it's a gem. There's a large lagoon that's created by a 3/4 mile sand spit that should provide awesome flat water kiting. Near Foley, Bayfront Park in Daphne is popular.

Otherwise, the entire gulf-side beach is wonderful! In summer, the wind is typically 10-15 knot thermals later in the day, if thunderstorms don't develop. Typically out of the SW, so side-onshore, and almost always enough to foil. Small waves, enough to foil-kite-surf a little, but not much more than that.

You'll have a harder time with a TT, but it's definitely possible, especially as a downwinder. Enjoy!

Thank you! Now to decide between the kite foil or wing....or both :)
