Passing through Cap Ferret, Bidart, and Mallorca , can I kite there?

Postby bkkite » Thu Jun 23, 2022 2:40 pm

I’m on a bit of a random summer trip through Europe, not explicitly for hiding. I’m going to end up in the cap ferret, Bidart in the Basque Country, and then down to Bilbao to hop over to Mallorca.

I was thinking of bringing a light foil setup to try to sneak in a session or two at any of these spots. Any tips would be helpful

You can kite at Cap Ferret - just not in the swimming zones - lots of waves -

Bidart....in summer - no. You can Kite at Madragues Anglet beach after 7 pm in summer - and I've kited at Tarnos north of Bayonne - and there is a Kite beach at Seignosse - its not windy and not many places you are allowed to foil

Here is a website with all the spots in the Basque country http://fksudouest.com/kite/spots

yes, I kited at:

Can Pastilla: summer breeze midday, daily. During summer lighter...better for foil. And need to stay upwind to stay away from swimmers.

Es Trenc: most beautiful water, nogo during summer, only off-season

Son Sera de Marina: get away during summer from the packed beaches...nice natural beach with less people. Can be quiet a shore break/wave to get thru. But ok for normal rider.

El Buzon: quiet a walk, but space during high season. Every level

Es Barcares: can some kiter...big shallow area. Street downwind...so be careful !

I'm going to Biarritz on friday - will take my kit - not that optomistic - but you do get teh odd day when the wind comes in and you'll have a great wave riding day

Do you live out there? I'll have my foil and a single strut so I'll be able to kite in pretty marginal wind.

Is Tarnos the spot you'll go to since its closest or is it worth the trip to Hossegor? I saw all the surfers when I was there a few years ago, but never any kiters (though I vaguely remember a kite school)
