Fins sticking ouside board's edge

Postby karalkal » Wed Jul 13, 2022 7:33 pm

Hi.
Bought this board a while ago and have not had the opportunity to test it yet.
I am taking it with me to Fuerteventura in a day and am slightly concerned about where the fins are mounted. I have never seen a board with its fins extending over the edges. The smaller sizes/other models of the brand don't seem to look like this.
I understand mounting the fins a bit further is supposedly to improve control when doing tricks but for the time being I am just happy to have a stable, reliable free ride - too early for free style yet. And even then the fins won't be so far outside...
So my questions are:
Should I really be concerned about that or it doesn't really make too much of a difference?
Has anyone seen a similar board set up?
I don't think that's particularly likely but could it be a designer's/manufacturer's error? It's a rather small business which I am more than happy to support but still...
Is it a bad idea to drill another hole on the inside and fix the fins there? Then they will be more or less in a more natural position.
Last not least does anyone has experience with KSP?

Are those fins mounted with 1/4 x 20 SS screws that go through
from the other side , (the top) ?
Also :
see how the bottom of the fin is tapered, so it lines up
with the back of the board ; it's Not a design error, and
was done for a reason.

If they are mounted with screws ; you can purchase smaller
fins , when you get better , and the board will skate and slip
around , a bit more.

Thanks Billie.
Yeah, mounted with screws, the "old" way.
This is the model by the way.

I cannot see how different fins will fit "properly". Another set I have sits just like these. The holes are just way too close to the edge.
Anyway, I will give it a try and see how it feels.
Thank you for the heads up!

Should not matter. Probably better for the board, when you prop it on a wall with either tip resting on the ground it will rest on the fins and not the edge of the board.

That ain't right! Those fins look enormous how tall are they? Normal fins vary but might be about 4.5cm tall or 1 3/4 inches

Hi.
They are about 2.2 inches at the tallest bit. Larger but not by much compared to the North ones I have. I guess if you are into free style this will allow you to edge harder, must help going upwind as well.
These are the fins themselves:

What I am more concerned about is their actual position on the board because I've never seen anything like that, live or online.
Well, I guess I will have to find out myself.
It looks like I got myself a proper freestyle board and now will have to learn some tricks. :o

I've built a lot of home made boards and put the fins everywhere all the way at the end and pretty far in. When the fins are out that far they usually have a little less grip because the rocker of the board means they don't stick as far down in the water when you put them on the end. Your fins are enormous though so if anything you might have too much grip. I've never seen a board like that so I'm not sure if it's a manufacturing defect or if the fins are just too big and the board was meant to have smaller fins. It will ride ok but if it's brand new and not used i would send a photo to the store and ask what is up. It's not right the fins should not stick out. It's more an esthetic problem as it doesn't look right but it will ride fine. If it's a used board i would get a saw and chop off the end of the fins just so it looks nicer. Or like you mentioned before you can drill new holes that works too. In freestyle you are in boots and because you are locked in you don't need or want huge fins. My wake style board has fins half the size of my board off board.

I agree with edt ; but drilling new holes will also include adding
a stiff core so the screw doesn't compress the lamination's
of the top & bottom surfaces.

Personally i would ride the board first ; then saw the top off
the fins a few mm at a time to get the desired effect. Shorten the
heal side fins first ; you can always reverse them if ya go to far.

Just ride the damn thing

If you’re asking the question on here if the things are in the right place it would suggest that you don’t have the ability to feel a 5 mm fin position adjustment
I’m not trying to be a dick about it but genuinely it will be fine just get out there and have some fun

Well, it took me a while to get used to this board - choppy, big waves at times, wind - rather gusty. I don't know if it is because of the fins or the size/weight of the board (smaller and lighter compared to the other boards I had tried) but I can say it wasn't the most forgiving board. Once used to it I enjoyed some amazing sessions though.
I can confirm it does work. :-D
Thanks for your advices/ thumbs ups!
