I agree, but to be fair the term "Marxist" is also thrown around a lot when people on the right are describing people on the left (or their views).

But I guess that could easily turn off-topic.

Crossing my fingers this will be a quiet day in Brazil. Protests are fine, but would be a disaster if they turned violent.
Right-wing protests here in Brazil are usually fine. A bunch of families with kids and elderly people, however, we know that some Lula supporters are getting infiltrated in the crowd to mess up.

Left-wing protests, in the other hand, are usually violent here since it's promoted by the labor unions with paid people. :(

I hope too, but pretty sure it will stay calm, so far.
Latest January 1st it could get bad…

Brasilia is already full with people on the streets, let’s see what happens in other cities.
Sure! January 1st will be worse. Both sides in the same place and we have the perfect ingredients for a tragedy

I cannot comment on that specifically for Brazil, but usually "the other side" sees "the others" as the violent ones. In the US 6th of January is violent from the left and BLM, Antifa etc. is violent from the right. I do not think this is anything inherently different from the side of your "allegiance" politically. Hitler on the "right" - Stalin on the "left" etc.

Time will show in Brazil I guess. I hope you are right and that the protests we now see will stay peaceful.

here in Brazil the "sides" are easy to recognize, in a short talk with people, and you can tell who supports Bolsonaro, who supports Lula and people "over the fence" (we call them "isentões" from the English word "exempt")

Lula supporters: labor Unions, mainstream media/journalists (Globo, UOL, Folha de SP), Universities -- students and professors (excluding me :lol: ), artists, workers of public services, criminals and drug dealers (no joke, Lula had 4/5 votes from prisioners allowed to vote), "MST" movement of people without land. They usualy wear red flags and clothes but in the last election started to remember that our flag colors are green, yellow (and blue). The violent side is usually associated with the labor Unions and supported by some militias like "black blocs";

Bolsonaro's supporters: police forces in general, military, truck drivers, more religious people (christians and catholics), farmers and they're usually wearing our colors and flag. The violent side of this group can come from truck drivers and farmers;

It’s a process.

The party from Bolsonaro just announced to have the election canceled, because they had no access to the data.

If they won’t, latest January 1. problems will start. Until then military will be in position.

Until then I think it’s all safe, just be aware if you are traveling here. If you return ticket is after January 1st, keep paying attention…

First of all, thanks a lot for the great information!

Second, and sorry in advance if this is a stupid question, why is 1 January a key date?

because it's when Lula is supposed to start his government.

People from both sides will be together in the same place (Brasilia, our capital).

Lula supporters to party and Bolsonaro's supporters to protest.

just got the info, the PL (party of Bolsonaro) didn't announce to have the election cancelled. They are waiting for a report about the election to be published in December.
Until then it should all be quiet.

In short Bolsonaro supporter gather by thousands in 3 areas of 2 cities, in front of army caserns, requesting intervention of army. This despite the army officials having issued comuniqué saying no irregularities in election. Article also mentionn international supervision also did not evoque irrugularities.
