Soma Bay December - what time expect

Postby akentmm » Wed Nov 30, 2022 5:55 pm

Had a look on Windguru and looks like a 3-4 day window this weekend of 16-19 gusting to 22 wind in Soma Bay. Has anyone any experience of winter kiting in Soma Bay. Is it worth it or only really in the summer. If so, what Size of kite and wetsuit do people use at this time of year. I am 85kg. Struggling to find anything on the web about it and local school not replying, will try and call tomorrow. But clearly don’t want to be duped in to travel for no wind etc.

Definitely Soma Bay has better wind than El Gouna.

Not sure, but I think you need a long wetsuit (4/3) in December.

But let's see what some locals say. IF not, check if there are some webcams around where you could see wat they use.

Thanks Toby, slight additional question to the locals ... which is the best forecast Windguru, GFS 13 etc?

In the beginning of November I worn no wetsuit but some people started to wear 3/2 short sleeves so December probably 4/3 as Tony mentioned.
Wind probably unpredictable I would trip on short notice unless you can afford not to kite much.
There is a thermal wind that adds to forecast if someone foils or have large foil kite should be safe to get some days on water

Was there 05.12.21-20.12.21 in 3/2 full ls and it was warm to hot. Many guys were 3/2 ss but I wouldn''t advice it as the wind is not so warm although it is a bit hot on a beach to drink beer under the umbrella.

When I was in the south of Egypt during Spring even if it was 26 degrees out with the wind chill it felt more like 20 degrees. That was down in Marsa Alam though.

Did you kitesurf in Marsa Alam? Can you please confirm what month did you go to Marsa Alam?

Been there 3 times (not specially for kitesurfing).

-2 times february: almost no wind
-1 time december: decent wind for 4 days, less wind but just enough to kite for 2 days (out of 7)

In my experience Egypt is hit and mis. Been a lot to El Gouna. Sometimes in winter perfect, sometimes nothing. Been there ones in summer in windseason: no wind.
