North Orbit / F-One Trigger / other?

Postby snowornever » Mon Dec 12, 2022 10:09 am

Hello,
I'm a XR core Rider since some years ago but now I feel stuck and that my kite is not helping me progress. A local shop/school (North & F-One Ebresurfers) wants to "patrocinate" me.

I like big air (my best is 18.1m), megaloops, board offs and flat tricks. I'm thinking on ORBIT, but I don't know anything about F-One trigger, for example.

I need two kites to cover windrange from 18kn to 45kn. Any ideas?

Those two kite are perfect for that, however you should definitely try to demo (just ask the shop) those kites before you buy them.
You will notice that the build quality on both of these kites is lower than Core.
If you can wait untill January, the Cabrinha Nitro could also be an option (same designer as the orbit, so almost identical kite and maybe a bit stronger?).
Core is also developing a new 5strut big air/megaloop/doubleloop kite, but I have no idea on when they will release it.

2 kites from 18 - 45 knots is a big ask! I'd want a 12m for 18knots and a 6 for 45 knots at a similar weight to you.

You aren't specific on what is lacking from the XR7 for you at the moment. I have to assume its the kite loops as the XR7 is a good kite for board offs and slides.

The duotone Rebel might be another kite to look at. Somewhere between the Orbit and the XR7 (boosts higher than the orbit and loops better than the XR7). I've seen guys throwing kiteloops on the latest Rebel on land which you wouldn't have seen a few years ago.

The other thing to consider is that you and I are light enough to get away without the extra struts. I've ridden an 8m Evo (standard not SLS) in a gusty 40 knots and it managed as well as the 5 strut kites. You could change to the Nexus or something else more allround (Dice?) and still get the top end. Unless you have legs built like an Olympic track cyclist you won't be loading the kite like the big lads so 3 struts will work fine. That opens up kites like Reedin superModel, Naish Pivot, Airush Lithium (did well in the blank kite test), North Reach, Harlem Go etc. Plenty of good all-rounders that jump close to the big air kites but force you to sharpen up your technique. That's one of the reasons I like the Evo (coming from the Rebel). I'm pretty close in total height but my technique is so much sharper as the difference between a good takeoff and a sloppy one is much sharper.

I doubt changing the kite will unblock your progression if you ride an XR in good condition with properly maintained bar. However, if you like megaloops, you might like the Orbit better, just don't expect it to be what breaks you out of being stuck.

Look at Jason Montreals kite comparison (core xr and orbit are compared, and a few others). For that wind range... What is your weight?

11 & 8m Orbits. I've never ridden an FOne.

You'll struggle a bit at 72kg and 45kn, but it's doable. You'll probably be able to loop the 11m in 18kn at your weight.

Thank you very much everyone for the replies! I want to clarify that I feel stuck when training the boogie loop for example; with the core XR6 9m and 30kn I feel a lot of danger! For slides and board offs, the kite is fantastic! And the other reason is that I have broken 3 times the kite (7 and 9) and 2 lines in the last month. This is a signal!! Jejeje!

The other day I was testing the new ORBIT 2023 and I discovered another sport, the easy kitelooping!! Within half an hour, inverted rotations with loops started coming out and I felt very confident. But since I've only tested that kite apart from my cores, I wanted to ask your experience.

We are switching in the moment from Fone bandit to North orbit exactly of the same reasons. I really like to loop, but I'm still but that good. Like the bandit for looping specially for big backroll kiteloops, but I always struggle a bit for big mega loops in strong winds.
Just tested the orbit and was impressed how easy it is for looping. I will miss a bit the good yank in the loops, but I think with bigger loop radius it will give me more yank. So we switch also to the orbit because I think I can learn easier with that kite in the moment, because it feels less scary. Maybe switching than later to other kite, when I improved my tricks.

Finally I think the winner is North ORBIT 2023. Thank you!
