Best cold water booties?

Postby esk777 » Thu Jan 05, 2023 3:46 am

I’m looking at the Mystic Supreme 7mm vs. the Solite Custom Fire 2.0 vs. the Xcel Drylock 7mm or Infiniti 8mm

Any recommendations? Go with the Kite brand? Any difference in booties designed for a kiteboard vs. a surfboard? Am in 45 degree water and my 3mm Mystic Stars won’t cut it - I take no pride in being cold!

I can highly recommend the Atan booties. They are as close as you can get to a bare foot feeling and are still super warm.

Ive tried lots of booties (although none from Mystic or Xcel) and the Solite are my favorites. The boardfeel is as good as I have found, they are quite warm (although the increased boardfeel does come at a small expense of warmth) and comfortable. The custom fit is good, so they don't have a lot of room to trap water and they stay positioned on my feet well. Nothing worse than a bootie that twists around or balloons with water.

Add a good pair of socks and you should be good to go with your current booties. I found surf booties are very warm but do not have the structure to stand up to the stresses kites put on your feet. For example on a windy
day when you are walking with your kite and digging in hard with your feet, the softer surf booties will break down quicker under that kind of stress. The neoprene on the inside heals of my hyperflex 7mm surf booties did this after a few sessions. I cut up an old wet suit and glued in some new heels on the inside and it actually worked well.

I have used my new Solites(8mm) a few times and definitely like them except for the stupid split toe on the sock. On a good note the design is great because now you can remove the sock for drying properly, and the booties themselves only have neoprene from the ankle up, the lower inside is just rubber, this is a game changer for stinkage IMO.

Atan hot Mistral 6.5 mm. Absolutely perfect heat, soft barefoot feel. They are a bit fragile though I usually walk with oversized Crocs on the beach to protect them.

I personally use the Xcel Drylock 7mm and for the first 6 months of use my feet stay actually dry which is a huge boost in warmth.
