Kitesurfing Accident Thursday Jan 5 information Request

Postby GoLoop5 » Sun Jan 22, 2023 2:31 pm

Hi all

First time posting for me and my first time in Cape Town but I wanted to ask if anyone had witnessed a kitesurfing accident. A buddy I was traveling with got out here the week before me and went for his first day on Thursday Jan 5th. He went right outside of the mystic kite house. Unfortunately he had a launching accident and sustained a head injury. I believe the paramedics had to be called and he was taken to the hospital.

I just wanted to see if anyone had witnessed the even and had more information. I am really curious to see what might have happened.

Thanks

When entering my car at Blouberg I saw a kiter drawn into the air a few meters. Looks like he crashed on the beach and the ambulance was called. Hope he has no big injuries.

He is still recovering there. Should get some insight this week. Ended up being a pretty bad head injury and slight kneck injury. He is stable but still recovering.

Thank you guys for the insight here. So sounded like a rough timing launch that ended up picking him up into the air and either he came down hard or got drug across the beach. Seemed like what you all were describing in that other forum. Sometimes you think to rig the 9 or 10 but the gusts really make you want an 8. Also great points about just launching and being ready to release your safety if anything picks up or goes out of control.
