Surfboard for big waves

Postby PaperKite » Sat Jan 27, 2024 10:26 pm

I'm looking for a directional board for strapless kitesurfing in big waves (double overhead+). Currently I have a Duotone Wam SLS. I'm considering the following options:
- Duotone Session SLS
- North Charge
- Cabrinha phantom
- Slingshot XR

Do you have any recommendations? Any other boards I should consider?

Session sls is superb, possibly a little fragile

I was on a cabrinha s-quad at one eye & it was perfect

North cross
“Cross was created to shred the waves in an ever-changing surf playground, ride real-world onshore conditions, flatwater and chop. It provides generous volume and width for a fun, forgiving ride with great upwind speed, and solid pop for freestyle tricks”

Definitely not what i’d pick for big fast waves

Doesn’t sound like a board I’d trust in double overhead either.

I like my Naish Global 6', but I put straps on it in big waves. Definitely not a fragile board, at least the two older ones I have.

Add the F-One Shadow to your list.
It’s popular for the bigger waves out west (US).

If you’re open to getting a custom board, check out the LOYD Pearl. This board has every attribute that you’re looking for in a board.

I have the Kite Rocket model. It’s another one to consider.

It IS such a Personal feeling....

The Charge 5'5 was a too small Board for my 75 kg... With too little riding Performance. On the Wave it was super comfortably, no hopping around, full confidence that it will not Slip away.... Sitting deep INSIDE the water, was hard for me to Edge hard on the toe Side, ESPECIALLY over the Front foot. Board Always needed Kite-Pulling... ESPECIALLY anoying in onshore / cross onshore.
They told me Jolou Langeree is using the 5'7 (If on the produduction Board)... So tried this one for only few minutes, seemed Like a different Board to me.

Sold the Charge 5'5 again, and got again a RRD maquina 5'7.
Always feels Like it is flying over the water...Not INSIDE.
Super fast - almost too fast. I Like it on smaller head high waves (Wave faces)because of the light and playfull Feeling.
Racing down the Line full Speed, with wide sweeping Turns IS the best. When going over the Front rail IT carves like a Race Snowboard - Like a knife through hot Butter... Easy in the feet, and ankles. Not a Lot of Pressure needed (totaly oposite to the Charge)... But If there is a little unexpected bump - Like on a Rodeo horse.
On BIGGER waves I Just go carving old man Style in the Wave faces... Not good enough to Attack three Meter plus Wave Faces breaking lip....
(Using full stiff fins.- will try a smaller softer "plastic" fin the Back.

The slingshots I did Not Like, probably just too big for me.
The Phantom really Looks nice. (18'5 seems again pretty wide... But depending on Body weight an feet size 😜)
The duotones are Just too much Money.

Just my oppinion.

(The cross IS a directional - Not a Wave Board. But really liked it for bump and JUMP freeriding)😂

If you can find one try a FireWire Tomo Hydroshort, light, fast enough, great carve, very fun.
