Great vid Toby! Especially the tip to clean off sand between LE and canopy, not one you hear often.

Brushing sand away is not good solution since you are literally "sanding" the kite by doing that. Much better is to shake the kite and hit the LE couple of times (while inflated) so the sand falls off by gravity. Kite must be totally dry while doing this.

Not sure on the dehumidified room one....
I've been storing kites in a basement with a dehumidifier for over 20 years and never had bad valves or bladders. That goes for any of my sporting goods gear...and even some expensive guitars have never prematurely aged from this. I would say the more likely culprit and scenario for the damage he displayed would be from people storing their kites inside of a hot car.

Take your whole quiver to the beach, pick the right size for conditions and leave the rest to roast. I think everybody has been guilty of that one.

UV and Flapping of TE cloth are the worst enymies.
In additionself launching/self landing at the beach is a bad habid, scarfs and weakpoints in LE dacron are common.
A wet kite always dry it at home, not store a wet kite in a bag longer than a few hours....
Folding technique is impprtant, try to fold kite segmented, nice and tidy smooth folds. Avoid any sharp kinks bends in dacron and spinnaker.

Avoid to roll kites air out and or push press it without proper folding into the bags etc,

Washing kites, Brushing kites, removing salt, can even be negative reduce kite life, reduce the coating.
Even removing all the sand from the kite, when in the bag it is not significant for shorter life, does really not matter. (the sand is loose, so will not do much harm in my experience)

I agree, and being too meticulous can be counter productive: always folding with the same pattern will damage the same spots over and over. Adding a bit of unpredictability to the folding (rolling) process helps preventing this!

Unless it's trapped between leading edge and canopy. If not removed, it will cause a lot of friction between 2 materials and pinholes will appear

yes but in more than 20 years of kiting, all kind of kites and inspections, i have not found wear to sand to be the weak spot.

(theoretically yes sand its an abrassive, cloth can wear if trapped etc, but if checking many old kites, inc my own kites, there is no vissible sand wear, but mainly wear due uv and flapping andfolding spots. Whilst we have very fine sticky sand, some times theres tons of sand in the bags, and I not clean all sand from kite.

most important is uv and wind damage. it's ok if they give all these other tips and want to follow them, but just make sure to do those two

if you rig a kite and have to change size pack down the first kite. If you don't you will make it age much faster as it lays out in the sun and wind

The guys that rig 2 or 3 kites and leave them flapping all day are the same guys that refresh their quiver every year.

This title could also apply to the kiter!

Eat less pies. Do more cardio. Stress less about work. Spend more time on the beach.

Love life & Kite more!!!!!!
