Neck rash caused by helmet strap

Postby mati » Sat Feb 03, 2024 12:19 am

After maybe an hour in the water, I get a rash in my neck because the chin strap of my helmet rubs against my skin. A longer session will end up with a pretty bad rash. If I am kiting the next day, no chance of wearing the helmet.
My helmet is a Gong helmet for watersports. It has a rubber pad on the chin strap, but it doesn't prevent the rash. I've tried loosening it and tighten it also, but no luck.
Any tip or helmet alternative?
There was a post 8 years ago where Vaseline was recommended to prevent this kind of rashes. At that time, helmets were not so popular, so maybe there is another solution/alternative.

You might be allergic to the rubber pad on the chin strap? Or the edge of the rubber pad is too abrasive.

Can you remove the rubber pad and just kite with the strap?

Gath helmets have a soft sleeve over the strap that's held in place by Velcro. Check the Gath website to see what it looks like.

You could get one made or source one online.

You can also try to put on a water proof plaster on that area before you go kiting.

Take a old sock for feet...
Cut Off the toes....
Pull over the Strap...
After closing the Strap, Take some extra 5 Seconds and pull the sock to the right Position....

Works for me...

Ahhhh forgot: only works with a bright pink sock 😉😉😉😉

You might try a neck gaiter - I like the ones by Buff with larger holes so you can breathe through them without the holes getting plugged up by water spray.

Some people are allergic to Sulfur which is used in plastics, glue, and rubber materials - could be some of the problem besides abrasive strap. There are over the counter skin creams and pills that can help with allergic reactions.

I have noticed some irritation from my helmet strap, if I don’t shave that day.
I.E. with 2 day stubble I think strap is pulling the chin hairs around causing rash like abrasion.
