That’s fantastic!

What shitty gear they had! But it worked!

Interesting the 3 line bar, don’t remember seeing it before…it looks sheet able.

And a real safety nightmare…just upwind of those rocks, with no depower at all.

Just crazy. But these are the real pioneers 👍🏻

Toby, that is a Kiteski bar, we've talked about them quite a lot on KF but not for a long time. There was no "real kill switch," although Hung Vu designed depowering leash something along those lines. I would say if you let go of the bar, built like a bicycle frame, you could decapitate a rhino with it. I thought this must have been shot earlier than 1998. Checking, Flash is using the same setup with a 3.5 m Wipika classic on the cover shot of a mag I got at the Maui airport in 1999! We had better bars in 1998 in short. I had a one of those reel bars in my luggage but never used it in those strong Maui winds fortunately.

AR wasn't yet invented, among many other things.

My first kite was designed on paper, I didn't have access to internet then. Rectangular foil kite, about 4m if I remember correct. Then became more foil kites, bigger, more cells and more AR. These kites were designed using Foilmaker.

At the beginning steering was with handles with a line in between, it was attached to harness which had a roll type "hook". Then Quadrifoils, Blades, PL arcs (Bomba, Guerilla) and first FS kites arrived and not after many years kites had bars and some had similar mixers as they have today. First "modern" kite which had these features was FS Psycho3 in 2006.

Psycho2 was slower but it already had decent usability, it wasn't unstable. 10m size was quite ok, 17m was slow, difficult to get decent air. I redesigned bridle for 17m making it able to loop without too much pain. There was left over bridle line for small kite, these early FS kites had unbelievable long bridles.

Psycho1 belonged to category "beast". Once I caught a guy dragged by it in a parking lot, heading to close road with lots of traffic... In gusty wind it was an experience you don't forget easily
