Please post replies as to whether locking shacles are being used in your area and what people think about them. I understand they are popular around The Gorge and often used in combo with sheet cleating systems. I would appreciate any information or discussion on this subject. Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi,

do you mean the panic hook?
here it is called like this and some of the guys in Germany use it, myself too.
I like it a lot, since I can't get out of it by surprise. I hated the situation when I did a jump fully powered up and missed the landing and by this the depower went out of the harness hook. Bringing the depower back into the hook is a nightmare when you ride overpowered.
And in situations when it is going to be dangerous you just pull the line. But the best set up for it is the one on the picture.
But I would do it to both sides with a line and a ball. You never know if you are able to reach the right side, but maybe you can reach the left side. And I would't use the wrist set up, just the ball. Otherwise you don't have your hands free for any tricks.

always pay attention with shackles!
there are some that wont open completely under pressure.

try them at home first (hook yourself to the ceiling and try to open in different angles)

there are better systems to come out soon which are lighter and open up 100% in every case.

Thanks everybody. It's great to meet kiteboarders on the opposite side of the planet! Mahalo for your help.

Panic hooks, huh? Apparantly here in Hawaii there is controversy about these devices being dangerous. Your method of using a string/ball set up on both sides seems like a good safety idea. WHAT ABOUT IF YOUR RELEASE THE HOOK AND THEN WANT BACK IN. IS THAT HARD TO DO OR NO? Here is what many riders around The Gorge on America's northwest coast are using.

(still haven't mastered posting image yet

"Tylaska T8 Snap Shackles are perfect for applications requiring high strength and light weight. They have a breaking strength of 8,000 lbs and weigh only 3.5 ounces in the standard bail configuration. Ideal for the 30 to 40 foot sailboat."

As I mentioned before, they like to use this along with a Sheet Cleating system so they can lock in at any point in the range of the bar. A twist of the wrist locks and a slight pull releases. DO YOU USE SOMETHING LIKE THAT, TOO? Here is a link to info on the Sheet Cleat:

Please I appreciate you continuing to discuss this as I am thinking of trying this out. Meanwhile, I'm trying to understand the bells & whistles on this most high tech message board! If 1st no succeed then EDIT!!!

ok, now I understand what you mean by locking shackle.

I had a Wipika with this kind of locking system and never liked it, because each time a gust came, I wasn't fast enough to unlock it and the gust hit me fully powered, ain't no fun. I prefer a depower which I can move immediately, since I always need it for jumping. It can be great for jumping, imaging that you can lock in the air and do e.g. a deadman. If you can't lock, you come down faster. But with the lock you have a longer airtime because you can lock it at the end where you have the most power.
I never used it but I should try it out.
Thanks for the idea!

The panik hook is worth a discussion, since if you buy a bad one it can cost your life.
If sand comes into some hooks, they won't open anymore.

In California, most are using the Ronstan snapshackles: RF6100, RF6110 and
RF6120. These snapshackles are rated at a minimum of 2500lbs as the point where
deformation occurs.

I also use an 8-knot versus chicken loop. When you want to release, the knot can't get stuck on anything...it just goes!

Hey Marina, thanks for the info. Can you direct me to a retailer and/or to additional info on the shackles you mentioned? Also can you tell me what you mean by the eight-knot?

Toby, thanks for your help and for the lead on the Flysurfer quick release. Does anyone know of an American website with more info on the Flysurfer gear?

I heard Cabrinha and maybe Naish are also coming out with versions of a locking shackle (panic hook). Does anyone know about that or any other brands with this type of device?

Thanks everybody and keep having fun!
