great pic,
Can't agree with you more.

Recently had an unexpected 30m downwind flight (on beach!) because of the above problem.

Ben Hanbury gave me a safety release that uses a sliding pin inside a loop of rope which you feed the chicken loop into to secure. It's fiddlely to get in but releases every time. That's what counts.

If you tell me how to post a pic I'll photo it and post on the site.

This type of release works fine if you use a small stainless steel ring on it, and not the rope directly.

No, it does NOT !

The ring is mandatory, if it should have just a chance of working.

But when this type of shackle is loaded with +200kg as when you want it to release, it might be impossible to release it !
The release forces can be so high, that you will break the line/ring instead, and then there is no chance left for a safe release.
Often it will work though - but the "not always" should make you think, right ?

Yes!, I tested that type shackle by hanging a rope from a tree and hooking in. @ 105kg the force to release was excessive. Then when the arm flips up it snaped my thumb till it was numb. Thus the name "Snap" shackle.
And best of all , the little stainless ring for the release pin was elongated after 3 releases under my full weight. VERY scary because if you loose that ring your are screwed!. So have a backup, like releaseable spreader bar. (my leash is attached to the spreader bar, so can't win)

Was told that when sailors use this type of shackle, (for the sail) that they hang from the release lanyard to pull the pin. So start pumping iron if you want to be strong enough to pull!

I use this type of shackle on my center ine, instead of a steel ring. I then use a Wichard 2673 snap shackle attached to my spreader bar as my primary release. I like the idea of redundant shackles. I agree about the difficulty of opening the side pin release shackles under high load. The tip swivels work great. Just need to use a system to prevent inadvertant opening due to water hitting the relase ball. They are very sensitive and release easily. I have a small dameter bungie line on mine, that paralells the release line, but is slightly shorter. THis takes up the shock of the water splashes, but still releases well.
