Did anyone try kevlar/carbon rod? Would hat be more resistant to breaking at the centre/plug end?
Wouldn't Dyneema/Carbon make more sense? Impact resistance can be double compared to 100% carbon. See the slide from a DSM presentation and here is the full document: https://mega.nz/#!WeZ0VYBD!X-_9i9PmW55C ... 5rnNG7800c

I happen to have 10 sq.m of DDCF005, 200gsm, T300/3K-SK99, which I don't need and can sell at cost.
Can provide also TDS and a copy of the DSM invoice on request. PM me if interested.

Is impact resistance an issue. So far my opinion is that it is not

Frankly, not my area of expertise. I saw some comments above on carbon bars breaking on impact with the cl/qr.
Another issue is making a composite tube vs buying a ready-made one :). Maybe just skinning a ready-made carbon tube with Dyneema/Carbon would be a more realistic option. An advantage I could see is if the tube cracks at either end (esp. while riding), the Dyneema should still keep the parts together and prevent complete loss of control over the kite.

Actually it can be. Carbon fibre alone will snap like glass and can cut hands up if over stressed. Blend it in with dynema, kevlar or innegra, especially on a sandwiched layer and it will likely still hang together. Also, the softer fibres are good as middle layers. Most stresses are over the internal and external skins of objects and thickening the distance between them is better done with a softer fabric as the hardness of carbon is wasted internally.

I designed some barend for my carbon bars out of hollow 3D-printend soft polyurethane, they fit in a 25x22.5mm carbon tube and come at €30.- a pair.

An adjustable-wodth carbon bar incl barends and leaders is €189.- (ex lines, trim, qr etc.)

Created by the master's hand!! top notch stuff, especially ur bars and lines are great stuff! as I have seen them on instagram.....espcially the green cobra barends

cheers dude :cool2:

I read through the thread and am intrigued to try it myself.

Do you know how much your diy bars cost you?

In a first guesstimate a very basic carbon bar with lines (4), a depower, SFS and a basic QR will cost me around 160 Euros.

While the biggest chunk is lines (100 Euros), it kind of puts the prices for ready bars into perspective. If I factor in work hours, tools, etc. than 400 Euros for a bar don't seem to be as crazy as I had thought before.

Anyway, now that I am hooked I'll do this for fun and learning.

One thing I could need help with is the QuickRelease.

Using a metal splint with a hole on one side and a plastic ball to hold it together sounds good, but I am having trouble finding the right metal thing. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Kind of looks like this: _______O

Thanks!

Only really old cabrinha leashes have the part BRM uses. They’re hard to find.
A 3mm stainless eye end cable fitting works fine.
Episwiss.com is a source for similar premade parts.
They’re expensive though, and look pretty chunky.
Somewhere in China there is tooling to make the part, maybe it will surface again.
Till then, the eye end works great and is cheap.

Make sure you set up whatever you rig carefully so parts can’t bind and test release!

Very hard to find this part and retail versions are ~$50

I used these. It is not necessary to bend the eye, but I liked it better that way.

Thanks!!

I will make a run to the local sailing store and see if they have any of the above in stock. Maybe they can also recommend something else.

Also about the red plastic ball: Is it big enough to be easy to handle in an ermergency?

I currently have a north bar and the iron heart (their fancy name for the QuickRelease) seems like a decent size to push away. So I was thinking of maybe getting something bigger than the plastic ball. Again I will ask in the store tomorrow, but if anyone knows I gladly take ideas.
