Hole/centre is made from West System Epoxy mixed with 10% graphite powder and shaped with this micro die grinder or a dremele tool same thing (see pic) hope this helps got it on sale for 25$
Nothing to do with PU tube that’s for around centre/depower line...

So after half a year of experimenting with diy carbon bars and using a flagless quick release I have decided I like my offset hole setup the best- a low friction ring lashed to intact carbon tube with carbon filament and epoxy. It provides some nice options for varying finger position around the line when one handed, helps with wrapping lines around the bar, and allows for a super strong yet light setup. My carbon bars with hole through the bar were too weak and broke, or too heavy with reinforcement to justify over regular bar.

About flagless setup: I’ve had a couple solo sessions where I had to land kite in water and walk in for safety due little beach and high winds. Without a flagging QR, this requires pulling in one front line to manually flag the kite. Tricky in high winds. Easiest to land kite Le down and walk/swim towards it quickly to let tension off lines, grab a front line and start hauling it in before the kite powers up. Not recommended. I foil exclusively so already in smaller kites. I gotta start riding less powered.

280 g 60cm bar with 27m lines, 2 m extensions, and QR.

Second bar always keeping most Carbon possible for strength no need to go so wide in middle...
Ordered these for the steering lines on the end...https://www.ebay.ca/itm/10-x-Grommets-P ... c525c2d00b

How did they break? While you were on the water?!

What kind of reinforcement did you use? How big was the hole you drilled and what size of carbon tube did you use?

I filled mine at the ends and in the middle with a reasonable amount of Epoxy and unless I go unhooked I really don't see it breaking. However, I will have to wait for less harsh conditions to actually test drive it.

Looks awesome!

Why do you keep the center hole so small? It almost looks as if it has rough edges on the inside.

How do you guys test the strength of the bar? I put one per batch in my test rig and it must hold at least 120kg before it breaks in two.

Maybe not the lightest with ~150gr at 60cm but strength and a nice big center are more important in my eyes than that last 10gr. I glue multiple tubes inside the main one and in the center a solid carbon rod.

Like this one best super strong used old cabrinha bar centre insert and 4mm carbon tube...got some 5/8 aluminum made on lave to fit in insert and carbon still decent light over 200 grams but just love cause it’s DIY
And if your bars are breaking might be low quality expoxy or not enough carbon use West System epoxy or another high grade they are wayyyy stronger then say 3M epoxy

How did they break? While you were on the water?!
They developed cracks around the thin sides of the hole and then I broke it over my knee easy enough testing its strength. The problem is making the hole big enough to not rub your depower lines raw. Even with graphite additive for less friction. You have to make that center hole super smooth or you'll be replacing your line frequently. The one pictured a few posts above looks like it's sharp and will cut the line. With double walled tube and enough epoxy it's fine, but then it's hardly lighter than light aluminum bars.

I have not read all the comments in here but I have looked at the pictures and when you drill a hole in the carbon all the strength is lost. If I would do a project like this I would instead use mats in carbon fiber and build up the Shape around a piece of balsa wood or styrofoam. I would also build up a reinforced area around the hole
